Kitten season has arrived! DAS sees a huge influx of kittens being born and brought in this time of year. Although our kitten nursery is now open, due to the increased intake, we still need foster homes to help care for both orphaned kittens and moms and kittens.
As a foster, the DAS Foster Team can set you up for success by providing formula, heating pads, bottles, and much more to provide the best home care for underage kittens. If you are interested in fostering kittens, please let us know by emailing DASFoster@dallas.gov.
We have several upcoming foster kitten training sessions to give you even more information and tools to support you and your foster kitten journey. The trainings are scheduled for April 13, April 27, and May 11. Sign up for a class here.
If you would like to support the kitten nursery and kitten fosters by donating supplies, you can use the Amazon link here to make a direct donation to our Kitten Nursery Wishlist.

In order to better support our underage fosters, we have created a new, closed group of Facebook specifically for you: D90 Kittens and Puppies! This group is a place for DAS fosters with underage kittens and puppies to ask questions, share tips, get resources, and share your cutest baby animal content! If you are an underage kitten or puppy foster, join the group today! |

Ticket to Ride is our out-of-state transport program, connecting dogs (and sometimes cats) from DAS with rescue partners in other states. These rescues tag pets for transfer, opening up valuable kennel space and giving them a second chance.
To support this effort, we need short-term fosters to care for pets before their journey! Once a pet is tagged for rescue, they are no longer available for local adoption.
What to Expect as a Ticket to Ride Foster:
- The commitment is typically 2-3 weeks, though delays can occasionally extend this timeframe.
- Pets traveling out of state must have a health certificate issued within 10 days of transport. We’ll schedule an exam at DAS and provide all necessary details.
-
Transport Day: Drop-off times vary. For flight transports, drop-off is the evening before departure. Ground transport times depend on the specific route.
How to Get Involved:
By fostering, you’re not just giving a pet a temporary home—you’re helping them get ready for their future life!

Icy A1242971 is a 2-month-old female with a heart of gold and a lot of love to give. She is looking for a short-term Ticket to Ride foster to help get her ready to head to a new life in Maryland on April 26! If you can let her crash at your place for a few weeks, email DASFoster@dallas.gov.
We are always in need of crates for medium to large dogs. Crates are very helpful for pets that need cage rest and to help acclimate a dog to a new home. If you have a crate that you are not in need of, you can donate directly to DAS or even purchase one via our Amazon wishlist.

We are now utilizing a text-based platform for all foster medical concerns. Review the graphic below for details. We are no longer utilizing Anipanion for foster medical concerns.
The foster medical phone number is 866-603-3692, and you will need to text "Foster" to the phone number to opt in for messages. When texting our vets, please be sure to include your foster pet's name, A#, a description of symptoms, and photos (if applicable). This texting line will be monitored by a DAS veterinarian every day of the week from 9am to 3pm.
When an animal is labeled as NODASMED by the medical team at DAS, it means that the resources to treat or possibly treat an animal for a severe injury or illness are not available or accessible for the shelter team and they will not be able to offer medical follow-ups or support for that animal. The team can send an initial round of medication if it is not injectable or a narcotic home at the time of pick up but will not refill this prescription. The foster will need to seek medical care at a personal veterinarian at their own cost. Simple texting Telemed support is not available for NODASMED as a general rule, HOWEVER, in exceptional cases the Telemed doctor can be reached out to for assessment purposes of CIRD-C, or a new issue or ailment not related to the one the animal is on NODASMED for. Examples of this would be if a dog went into foster under NODASMED for severe CIRD-C and over some time has improved dramatically, the foster would be able to ask the Telemed doctor for an assessment to remove the NODASMED. Or if an animal went into foster care under NODASMED for a broken bone needing surgery but has developed CIRD-C, then the foster can reach out to Telemed to assess the CIRD-C but not the surgery or its recovery. On the flip side if an animal went into foster without the NODASMED status and has developed while in foster an illness or injury that is determined to be beyond the resources of the shelter medical team a NODASMED status can be applied, and the foster has the option of taking on the medical cost for the animal or bringing it back to the shelter for the shelter to determine next steps for the animal.
There is an additional status of PRE-LAB MEDICAL. This indicates that the pet has received treatment here for a medical concern and may require follow up but that follow up medical care will be provided by DAS for the foster.
Looking for some support as you foster? Please join Sarah for all things Adopets, Media, Events, Basic Dog Training, and Support on the 2nd Saturday of every month. Register to attend each month at this link.
