Dallas Animal Services Testing for Canine Respiratory Disease

DALLAS - The health and well-being of all the animals in our care at Dallas Animal Services is always our priority. We are currently taking proactive steps, working to manage a situation in our shelter - Canine Infectious Respiratory Disease (CIRD). Testing is taking place to understand the underlying cause to ensure we provide the proper cleaning and medical protocols at our location to reduce its effects on our population. We are awaiting lab results.

For the safety of Dallas dogs, DAS will begin limiting intake over the counter to critically sick or injured dogs. DAS encourages struggling pet owners considering owner surrender to visit www.bedallas90.org/pet-resources to access pet support resources and DAS’ Home to Home Program, which helps residents locate adopters and avoid the shelter.

DAS asks that residents who find friendly lost dogs, schedule a time to have them vaccinated and take them home for three days while their vaccines take effect. DAS will provide resources to help find the dog’s owner and if unsuccessful, the finder will bring the dog into DAS. Finders can make a vaccine appointment by emailing DASPetSupport@dallas.gov, visiting https://das.as.me/vaccine, or calling 214-670-6742. An appointment is required to reduce wait times and limit dog vulnerability.

As Dallas Animal Services continues its commitment to surpassing the current 89% Live Release Rate for dogs, we ask for the community's ongoing support in our lifesaving efforts. DAS is home to many healthy and adoptable animals, and we encourage individuals to consider adoption, fostering, or rescue. Together, we can help find loving homes for our furry friends and continue making progress in our mission to save lives.

We thank the community, as always, for their continued support as we navigate this matter.
