DALLAS - The City of Dallas Office of Homeless Solutions (OHS) joins the nation in observing National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week (NHH Week) from November 17-23, 2024. This week is dedicated to spotlighting homelessness and inspiring community involvement to aid those in need.
With the support of the Dallas Public Library and the OHS Friends Group, OHS’ commemoration of NHH Week will be the largest to date. The week begins with the first anniversary celebration of the OHS Friends Group on November 18, 2024 from 6:00 to 7:30 PM at Smoky Rose, 8602 Garland Road.
Hosted by OHS, the event will highlight the achievements of the group’s first year of service to neighbors experiencing homelessness. It also marks the start of OHS’ first citywide coat drive. The event is open to individuals of all ages and will feature live music, non-alcoholic beverages, and appetizers sponsored by Smoky Rose. Attendees are encouraged to donate new or gently used adult-sized coats and learn more about the 300-member Friends Group.
“The goal of this week is to raise awareness of homelessness through volunteerism, donation and education,” said Councilmember Paula Blackmon. “It has been exciting to witness the growth and evolution of the Friends Group since it was founded last year. We applaud our current friends group members and welcome more to join us!”
Coats can be dropped off at select City of Dallas branch libraries and Smoky Rose through December 31, 2024. Organizations interested in hosting their own coat drive can contact the OHS Friends Group for support.
City employees are encouraged to donate new winter hats and gloves as part of the first Winter Warmth Charity Challenge. Interim City Manager Kimberly Bizor Tolbert will present awards to the winners of this friendly competition between City departments.
NHH Week activities have been designed to support homeless services providers as they prepare for winter weather and the holiday season. The public is encouraged to direct their charitable giving to providers or contact the OHS Friends Group for direction and assistance.
“I want to thank the homeless services providers whose mission it is to serve residents experiencing homelessness,” Ms. Bizor Tolbert stated. “I have witnessed their lifesaving work firsthand on numerous occasions. Their partnership with the City, particularly during the upcoming winter season, highlights the need for responsible giving through community service and financial support.”
Details about all NHH Week activities, including coat drive drop off locations, can be found on the City of Dallas Events Calendar. For more information about volunteer opportunities and the OHS Friends Group, email OHSVolunteer@dallas.gov.
