Mayor Johnson Speaks at Design Kickoff for Regional Law Enforcement Training Center

DALLAS – Dallas Mayor Eric L. Johnson on Thursday delivered remarks at the design kickoff of the new Regional Law Enforcement Training Center.

Mayor Johnson was joined by other local and state officials including Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick, Senator Royce West, Interim City Manager Kimberly Tolbert, Dallas Police Chief Eddie Garcia, Dallas Mayor Pro Tem Tennell Atkins, and Dallas City Councilmember Cara Mendelsohn.

“Public safety has always been my highest priority for Dallas,” said Mayor Johnson. “Dallas remains committed to supporting law enforcement, which includes ensuring that our police officers are well-trained and fully equipped to keep the people of Dallas safe.”

“Upon completion, this center will offer state-of-the-art training for hundreds of recruits and revolutionize our efforts to ensure that Dallas is the safest major city in America,” said Mayor Johnson.

“I am proud to be here today for the design kickoff of the Regional Law Enforcement Training Center to further show my support for our brave peace officers, who risk their lives daily to keep our communities safe,” said Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick. “Following the shooting of several Dallas police officers in July 2016, I made it a priority for Texas to deliver protective vests capable of withstanding a high-caliber rifle round for every Texas law enforcement officer. As Lt. Governor, supporting law enforcement will always be a top priority of mine, and I look forward to fighting for our brave peace officers during the upcoming legislative session in 2025.”

“Collaboration is critical to this project. From UNT Dallas to the state legislature, and the philanthropic community who is raising millions of dollars to make this academy a reality. This is what a successful public private partnership looks like,” said Interim City Manager Kimberly Bizor Tolbert.

“Today’s kickoff is one step closer to building a state-of-the-art facility that will prove our commitment to recruit and train future Dallas Police Officers for many years to come,” Tolbert added.

The Regional Law Enforcement Training Center is estimated to be completed in 2027, with construction beginning in 2025. Located adjacent to the University of North Texas at Dallas, this facility will enable the Dallas Police Department to improve its recruiting efforts and will accommodate hundreds of new cadets for the Dallas Police Department. In his remarks, Lt. Gov. Patrick said he supported adding another $5 million in funding for the training center this upcoming session.
