Read, Discover and Create This Summer at Dallas Public Library
DALLAS – Dallas Public Library’s popular summer program, SMART Summer, starts June 1 at all 30 library locations, bringing free science, math, art, reading and technology activities to engage all ages.
This year, kids can earn rewards for all the different ways they learn over the summer - not just reading, but also for discovering new ideas and creating new things. That includes attending library events, visiting museums, making original art and doing other hands-on activities on their own or in the library.
“SMART Summer is a wonderful program that provides enriching educational opportunities to families across Dallas at no cost,” said SMART Summer Honorary Chair Mayor Eric L. Johnson. “Kids and teens can freely use Dallas libraries to keep cool, expand their knowledge, and most importantly, stay safe all summer long.”
Families can kick off their summer fun on Saturday, June 1, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the J. Erik Jonsson Central Library and the Fretz Park, Hampton-Illinois, Lochwood, Park Forest and Pleasant Grove branches. Festivities will include games, crafts and giveaways, plus free books from Dallas ISD and activities presented by Big Thought.

Students 18 and younger who sign up for the SMART Summer reading challenge earn a free book for every 10 days they read, discover or create, up to five times through August 10. If they complete a combination of 50 days of reading and activities, they will be entered in the grand prize drawings.
Online registration is now open at www.dallaslibrary.org/smartsummer.
All 30 library locations offer weekly programs for kids that help reinforce science, math, art and technology skills. Events include performers, such as magicians, music and live animals, and hands-on projects that include engineering, math, science and more.
“SMART Summer keeps those skills sharp,” Director of Libraries Jo Giudice said. “This year we are capturing that additional learning and rewarding it.”
Adults can read, discover and create, too! Participants over age 18 must read 15 days and/or complete 5 activities to earn a free book.
SMART Summer is supported by the Friends of the Dallas Public Library and community sponsors, including Atmos Energy, Pizza Hut and First Book, Margot Perot, Lauren and Will Waldrop, SMU, The Freebie Guy and Astrid Merriman. For the complete list of sponsors, visit www.supportdpl.org/smart-summer
