City of Dallas Hosts public art dedication ceremony for Harmony at Everglade Park

Public Art Ceremony: 10 a.m., Saturday, May 18, 2024

DALLAS - A new sculpture at Everglade Park entitled Harmony was informed by community engagement and embraced themes of growth, the natural environment, and characteristics of the neighborhood. The City of Dallas Office of Arts and Culture and Dallas Park and Recreation Department will officially celebrate the public art installation at 10 a.m., Saturday, May 18, 2024 in at Everglade Park (5100 N. Jim Miller Rd., Dallas, TX 75227). The event is free and open to the public.

Installed in November 2023 the artwork titled Harmony by artist Laura Abrams serves as a symbol of harmony, hope, transformation, forward movement & a brighter future, butterflies remind us of the fleeting aspect of time.

“Art in public parks inspires people’s imaginations and connects the artists to the local community. I am thrilled to welcome Harmony to Everglade Park. This impressive artwork is the latest installation in a Dallas Park,” said Director of Dallas Park and Recreation Department, John D. Jenkins, “Almost 100 parks are home to original artworks, thanks to our collaboration with the City of Dallas Office of Arts and Culture. Our longstanding partnership is transforming the look of our parks and the visitor experience.”

Harmony displays a tiny sulfur yellow butterfly, so common in the spring and summer, shines one of the brightest splashes of color against the flowers & blue sky. The way they so delicately hang from the flowers to collect their pollen and playfully flit from place to place is so much fun to watch and reminds us to stay light-hearted and live harmoniously as we too flutter about and shine our own uniqueness in this great big world.

“The Office of Arts and Culture Public Art Program places meaningful art installations for the Dallas community to view and enjoy,” said Director of the Office of Arts and Culture, Martine Elyse Philippe. “Collaboration with the Dallas Park and Recreation team is extremely impactful as residents and visitors are able to join the celebration of unveiling our public art pieces.”

This piece was funded in part by the Buckner Terrace Neighborhood Vitality Grant and Dallas Public Art Program.

The Dallas Public Art Program manages the commission and acquisition of new public art as well as the conservation and maintenance of the existing City of Dallas art collection. Works of public art, many created by local and regional artists, enliven parks, libraries, fire stations, recreation centers and many more public locations in Dallas.
