Heartworm Treatment
The DAS surgery team has been hard at work, and we are starting to do more spay/neuter surgeries for pets that do not yet have an outcome. For heartworm positive dogs, this means we are also starting to do heartworm therapy for pets still in the shelter. The medication for the heartworm therapy must go into a very specific spot in the dog's lower back, so it is much safer for the pet and easier for the treatment team to do this therapy at the time of spay/neuter when they are already sedated. After the heartworm therapy, these dogs will need to remain on strict kennel rest for 4-6 weeks and will not be able to participate in Daycations or Running Club.
However, volunteers can still take dogs who have completed their treatment for short walks on a leash in the yard. You can find the treatment date on each dog’s kennel card under 'Surgery Date' along with a green heart with a checkmark.
Offsite Event Leads
As warm weather approaches, we're gearing up for more events in the coming months! Offsite events are a fantastic way to promote fosters and adoptions. We’re looking for volunteers with canine handling training to help lead these events. If you’re interested, please email our event coordinator, Jen, at DASEvents@Dallas.gov
Volunteers who have completed the Canine Handling Training can view upcoming offsite event opportunities after watching the offsite event video.

 Daycations Update
We’re excited to announce that we’ve achieved nearly 800 positive outcomes for our pups! In January alone, over 60 dogs got to enjoy a fun-filled day outside the shelter.
And there’s more good news—March will bring even more opportunities! We’re increasing the available appointments to 20 spots per day, so don’t forget to book your Daycation!
With more dogs heading out for their adventures, we’ll need extra hands in the morning to get them ready. If you're interested, sign up as a Daycation Helper! (Canine Handling Training required.)
Volunteer Shout Out!
Every newsletter we try to randomly select an active volunteer to recognize for all of their hard work! This month, we would like to shout out Thomas Netsch. Thank you for everything you do as a volunteer.
Do you have any pets at home?
No, but I grew up with two beautiful pups, both of which were rescues: Lambeau (a Pitt) and Maggie (a Shih Tzu).
What is your favorite volunteer position?
Adoption Desk Assistant. I enjoy answering adoption inquiries and learning from the staff members. I also enjoy helping with transporting animals.
What is your favorite part about volunteering with DAS?
Showing animals the love they deserve, interacting with other staff members, and learning how to expand my volunteer experience.
Do you have a favorite DAS story to share?
I take pleasure in transporting animals and carrying out various duties beyond the kennel environment. Additionally, working with dogs has been a truly enjoyable experience. Under Tiffany's mentorship, I've learned canine handling and am excited about all the additional skills I’ll pick up moving forward.
