DALLAS - The City of Dallas Office of Homeless Solutions (OHS) Monday celebrated the incredible success of its Friends Group Membership and Coat Drive event, held at the renowned Smoky Rose Restaurant in Dallas. The event, supported by Friends Group Honorary Chair District 9 Council Member Paula C. Blackmon and honored by Deputy City Manager Kimberly Bizor Tolbert showcased the unwavering commitment and dedication of the Dallas community to address the pressing issue of homelessness.
With the compassionate and spirited involvement of Dallas residents, the event surpassed all expectations -- evidence of heartfelt support and desire for change within the community. The Friends Group event exhibited the remarkable power of collaboration in seeking tangible solutions to combat homelessness in our city. Over 500 coats were received at the event, and donations are ongoing.
“The first gathering of the OHS Friends Group was a huge success. The response to the Friends Group has been incredible,” said District 9 Council Member and honorary chair Paula Blackmon. “Residents are eager to learn more about homelessness and serve our unsheltered neighbors. I am proud to be a member of the group and encourage everyone to join."
“We are thankful for the 500 coats donated by OHS Friends Group members,” said Deputy City Manager Kimberly Bizor Tolbert. “The OHS coat closet would not have been possible without them. Our street outreach team will immediately begin distributing coats to our unsheltered neighbors. Everyone deserves to stay warm and healthy this holiday season.”
To extend the impact of this initiative, the City of Dallas Office of Homeless Solutions encourages individuals and organizations within the community to participate in the ongoing coat drive. Contributions of coats can be made by simply dropping them off at the Smoky Rose Restaurant, 8602 Garland Road Dallas, Texas 75218. Every coat received represents an opportunity to provide warmth and comfort to those facing homelessness during the winter months.
The City of Dallas Office of Homeless Solutions is immensely grateful to the community for their unwavering support and contributions towards this essential cause. Together, we are making a profound difference in the lives of our homeless population, fostering an inclusive and compassionate community for all to thrive.
For those who were unable to attend the first Friends Group gathering, additional membership drives are planned for 2024.
