DAS Heart Worm Protocol Changes
Dallas Animal Services' new heartworm protocol officially went into effect on Monday, October 16th. We are excited to get this new protocol up and running! Here are some more details on how the new protocol will work.
- All unaltered adopted, fostered, or reclaimed dogs will receive heartworm treatment at the time of surgery if they are heartworm positive.
- This treatment will include 12 months of heartworm prevention in a single injection, as well as a single compound that kills heartworms.
- The process for altered dogs being adopted, fostered, or reclaimed will vary based on the time of day.
- Altered dogs if leaving before 4 pm the same day will be walked down to the medical team and treated at that time.
- Altered dogs leaving after 4 p.m. will be scheduled like usual to come back to receive treatment.
- All dogs will need to have 4-6 weeks of limited exercise following treatment.
- All dogs leaving who have completed treatment will receive a heartworm flyer with their animal release paperwork (ARP). This will cover questions with regard to the treatment and follow-up.
- Dogs in foster already may be scheduled to return for their heartworm treatment through Anipanion.
- Dogs leaving to rescue will receive the same protocol as above unless they choose to pursue alternative treatment at their own expense.
 Off-Site Event Updates
This past weekend was a busy one for off-site events - we had five of them over two days! Thank you to everyone who volunteered this weekend at the Hollywood Feed, Paw Patrol Live show, Girl Scout, Katy Trail, and Barktoberfest events. Across all of the events we had 10 adoptions, one foster to adopt, and one shelter dog who went home with a new foster parent. Beyond that, we made a positive impression on hundreds of new people who may not have heard about DAS before, and may come back to adopt, foster, or volunteer in the future.
We have a few other exciting off-site event opportunities coming up over the next few weeks:
Dallas Fan Fest - Friday, October 20th from 3 - 6 PM
Join us for an adoption event at The Dallas Fan Fest, located at the Dallas Convention Center! We are looking for two volunteers who can help handle dogs and talk to the public at this event. Volunteers at this event will receive passes to attend the Dallas Fan Fest.
Hollywood Feed - November 11th from 10 AM - 2 PM
This event will be located at 2031 Abrams Rd, Dallas, TX 75214. The theme will be "Pictures with Santa" and we are looking for a volunteer who is able to take professional quality photos at the event to provide to event attendees. If you are available, please reply to this email and we can get you connected with the volunteers leading the event!
Additionally, we are looking 2-4 volunteers per shift (10-12, 12-2) to assist with sharing DAS acumen, awareness, and opportunities to get involved as a donor, foster, adopter, or volunteer. This event will also be supported by 1-2 Pet Project team leads and include DAS foster pups (1-2 per shift). Questions? Contact Caroline Ward, Danielle Staudenmaier, Kristen Sudela, or Liz Foster.
Wear the Mascot Costume - Swiss Avenue Historic District, Alliance Against Crime, Beautification and Safety Alley Cleanup - October 28th from 9:30 - 11:30 AM
We are looking for one or two volunteers who are able to wear the mascot costume at this city run community event! This event will be located at 5501 Swiss Ave. Dallas TX, 75214 and will be a great way to inform the community about Dallas Animal Services.

Dog Fight De-Escalation Training
We will be having a dog fight de-escalation training for all volunteers on November 1st at 6 PM.
This virtual training will teach volunteers how to de-escalate a situation in which two dogs are fighting and require human intervention. The purpose of this training is to better equip volunteers with safe handling skills and how to handle a potential dog fight. Volunteers with this training will not be required to intervene in the case of a dog fight if they do not feel comfortable.
We will try to hold these trainings monthly for volunteers who are interested.
If you would like to join the training, you can sign up using the link here!

Pet Food Pantry Food Drive
Our pet food pantry is in need of donations to help us feed hungry pets in our community! One amazing way to help us gather donations during the holiday season is a food drive in your community. If you, or anyone you know, is able to run a food drive this holiday season, please email us at DASVolunteer@dallas.gov.
We can only use unexpired and unopened food for the pet food pantry. We are in need of both dog and cat food, and can use both dry and canned pet food.
