MENDING GARDENS:
THE AGED NEW
A Collaborative Project
by the Black Mari and Abby Bagby
Thursday, September 7, 7 - 10 PM
Community is made up of collaboration and exchanging of ideas, of spending time together not only to share resources but to share joy and stories. In this, we build each other up and remind ourselves that this is how we are meant to exist. We believe in being in physical space together and putting our hands to the work, experiencing life through touch. We believe in breaking down hierarchies and celebrating collective engagement, using art to further those ideals.
mending gardens: the aged new is a collaboration between the Black Mari, Abby Bagby and residents of Dallas. Through organic creation and tactile activity, any who chose to participate added their skills and narrative to two textile-based works, thereby generating a conversation that takes the work far past what either individual artist could've created alone.
The artworks engage the longstanding historical arts of weaving and garment-making, disciplines widely known to be communal practices. Keeping true to anticapitalist and collectivist ideals, the participants aren't required or expected to display "talent" of any kind, instead to use their unique background and abilities to approach each piece in a way that feels natural to them. Every artist is equally credited for their contribution, each voice being as important as the next within the final product.

 Romulo Martinez
For Good or Bad
September 9 - October 7, 2023
Reception: September 9, 6 – 8 pm
The Oak Cliff Cultural Center is pleased to present artist Romulo Martinez’ For Good or Bad opening on September 9 with a reception from 6 – 8 pm.
Venezuelan born artist Romulo Martinez incorporates various mixed media techniques including painting, collage, and serigraphy to create two and three-dimensional artworks that represent human emotion through allegorical narratives with color playing a key conceptual role. Often playful and surreal, Martinez’ work seeks to connect the viewer to their own emotions and human experience thereby infusing the work with new narrative and conceptual content.
In For Good or Bad Martinez’ newest body of work continues his exploration into the complexity of human experience where emotion and thinking coincide to guide one’s personal narrative. While the objects and elements in his work are sourced from his own self-discovery, their existence in the everyday allows the viewer to connect through a collective narrative of human existence while offering a perspective different from their own.
Romulo Martinez is a Venezuelan artist residing in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, Texas. Martinez has a degree in Fine Arts, Mention in Painting, from the University of Zulia and a Master’s in Artistic Production, Artistic Practice specialty, from the Polytechnic University of Valencia, Spain.
He has several awards and artistic recognitions, and 12 solo exhibitions in leading museums, cultural institutions and private galleries, including the most recent Reflejos held at Daisha Board Gallery – Dallas. His work has been exhibited in more than 70 collective exhibitions, festivals, and art salons internationally including Maracaibo, Caracas, Valencia, Maracay, Barcelona, Trujillo and Ciudad Bolívar, Bogotá-Colombia, Valencia-Spain, Aruba, City of Singapore-Singapore, Lima-Peru, and within the United States in Miami, Dallas, Frisco, Coppell, Denton, Plano and Fort Worth.
