Dallas Animal Services offers free treatment of Heartworm positive pets when tagged or adopted through DAS. When tagging a pet, please inform the rescue team member of your interest in treatment so we can get you on the books for an appointment. Our treatments are in high demand and have limited space, so we recommend booking in advance.

Common asked questions about HW Treatment:
How long is the treatment?
Most of our treatments will last 90-days.
What's your process?
Heartworm assessment: Your pet will spend the day with us, undergo additional testing, and receive an overall health evaluation by our veterinarians to determine the best course of treatment. At this time, oral and injectable medication might be prescribed to reduce the risk of possible adverse reactions and your next appointment will be scheduled for 30 days out.
1st Injection appointment: At this visit, your pet will receive the first of three total injections of Diroban, the medication used to eliminate Heartworms. Your rescue pet will be sent home same day and put on a minimum activity level for an additional 30 days.
2ed and 3rd Injection appointment: At this visit, your rescue pet will stay overnight here at Dallas Animal Services to receive the final two injections. On the first day your rescue pet will receive the second of the three Diroban injections, along with other oral and injectable medications as needed and monitored. The following morning your rescue pet will receive the last of the three Diroban injections, along with other oral and injectable medications as needed. When your rescue pet is sent home the next morning, they will receive additional information and be again on minimum activity level for a additional 30 days.
Why are your heartworm treatment appointments booked so far out?
Dallas Animal Services offers free treatment for all heartworm-positive pets adopted through our shelter. All heartworm therapy is done in-house by our medical staff, which also oversees the wellbeing of all pets still in our shelter, so we can only offer a limited amount of treatments daily.
Can I expedite the process by getting my rescue pet on pre-injection medication now?
Yes! Our medical team does require it to be under the supervision of a veterinarian and that medical records be provided on the day of the appointment. Failure to do so might result in for cancellation of the appointment.

I can’t make it to my appointment scheduled. What do I do?
We understand that running a rescue can be very hectic with all the communication and the movements required to save an animal's life. We can offer one rescheduled appointment for our partners. Don't hesitate to contact our rescue team as soon as possible so we can get you rescheduled for your treatment.
