 CIV Update
We’re so excited to share that we have not had a positive CIV test since May 1st, and we are starting to move back toward normal operations. Over the next week, we will be testing all of the dogs in our exposed area to inform our next steps, but our hope is that we will soon be able to declare DAS CIV-free!
We’ll talk more about our strategies for moving out of the Clean Break during our Rescue Town Hall on Tuesday, and we hope you’ll join us.
Just as a Reminder: Tagging Template
Last month we launched a new way of tagging pets to ensure clear and efficient communications. As a friendly reminder, please use the following template for your future tagging!
Rescue Name:
Animal ID:
Spay or neutered needed?
Person picking up:
As a reminder, all pets must be picked up within 24 hours of being tagged or the day they are released from their hold. If you have any questions about this new template or the pickup timeline, please reach out to us via email!

We would love for you rescue to consider one of our longest stay pups for your next pull from DAS. We have tons of information on these pets from medical to playgroup makes these kiddos a great choice!

At DAS, we are so grateful to our partners in lifesaving, and we are thrilled to highlight our amazing transport partner, Hearts and Bones. Since partnering with Heart and Bones Rescue, they have taken over 1,300 DAS animals into their program. We want to say thank you and spotlight the great work they are doing!
How would you describe HBR?
Hearts & Bones Rescue ("HBR") is a dual-city rescue that focuses on getting dogs out of overcrowded Texas shelters to the Northeast to find forever homes. HBR has been working with DAS since our inception in 2017. As the largest municipal shelter in the DFW area (and one of the largest in the country), we want to help DAS reach its no-kill, D90 life-saving goal.

What made you want to work with DAS?
There aren't currently enough local adoptions to offset intake at DAS and in Texas, so we take to the skies and the road to get them to NYC where there are loving fosters and adopters waiting for them.
How does the TTR program help your rescue reach its goals?
One of the big questions we get asked is why we send dogs to the Northeast. HBR is very aware of and keeps close track of local problems as to not needlessly import animals where they aren't needed or compete with local shelters. What we've seen over the years is that many of the local shelters in the Northeast have much faster adoption rates and don't have the same kind of intake that DAS has. Many long stays in Northeast shelters are not a match for adopters that adopt through us (e.g., behavior, bully apartment breed restrictions, etc.). We often bring dogs to adopters that they can't find locally - New Yorkers love big floofs like the Great Pyrenees, for example! We also help support and pull from local shelters.

What is the biggest hurdle when it comes to moving pets up north? Any words of advice to other groups waiting to try out TTR?
We started using the TTR program to help get DAS dogs out of a very full DAS facility into foster homes while they await transport, which usually is a week or a couple of weeks. This allows dogs to get out of the shelter to get a much-needed reprieve, and also opens up that kennel for another dog that needs the spot. TTR is a great tool for any group looking to do transports, as long as your group representatives are clear on the expectations, timing, and obligations with the TTR foster. Thanks DAS for setting up this program!

Since working with DAS, is there a pet you think of as your favorite tag?
In terms of our rescue favorites, HBR has always had a soft spot for families in shelters, as they are some of the most vulnerable population. In 2022, we took in 16 pregnant and nursing moms and their 78 babies! Our 3 most recent mama and puppies are all from Dallas Animal Services.
