City of Dallas partners with stakeholders on Texas Fibroid Awareness Month campaign

Dallas - This July, the Barbara Jordan Leadership Institute, the Fibroid Institute of Dallas, and the City of Dallas, in partnership with medical providers and community leaders will host the 2nd Annual Texas Fibroid Awareness Month campaign to improve access to information and resources to address uterine fibroids.

“We are grateful that the City of Dallas and community stakeholders have joined our organization in raising awareness about this important health equity issue,” said Lorraine Birabil, Co-Founder and Executive Director of the Barbara Jordan Leadership Institute. “Together we will work to engage marginalized communities and ultimately ensure they have the information they need to make well-informed decisions about this common but complicated health issue.”

Texas Fibroid Awareness Month was created to raise awareness about this life-altering health condition and the physical, psychological, and economic impact that it has on 80 percent of women. Studies show that Black women are disproportionately affected by uterine fibroids. Nearly a quarter of Black women between 18 and 30 have fibroids compared to about 6 percent of white women, according to some national estimates. By age 35, that number increases to 60 percent.

“Fibroids are not a political issue. They are a critical medical, social and financial issue that disproportionately affects women of color,” said Council Member Paula Blackmon, District 9. “The City of Dallas is committed to increasing the well-being of our residents and advancing education about women’s health. We are leveraging our resources to do just that.”

Texas Fibroid Awareness Month will include educational forums and a period product supply drive culminating in a fun and informative free Self-Care Health & Beauty Fair from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, July 29 at Cedar Crest Golf Course, 1800 Southerland Ave., Dallas, TX 75203. The event will include health and beauty vendors, health screenings, food trucks, and children’s activities. By partnering with the Fibroid Institute of Dallas and the Barbara Jordan Leadership Institute, Dallas is among the first few cities in Texas to shine a light on this critical health condition.

“Dallas is showing leadership in addressing the most prevalent and costly health issue affecting women: uterine fibroids,” said Dr. Suzanne Slonim, M.D. at the Fibroid Institute of Dallas. “The Dallas City Council’s proclamation of July as Fibroid Awareness Month is a first step toward destigmatizing gynecological health conversations so more women can become informed about possible solutions.”

The City of Dallas, the Barbara Jordan Leadership Institute and other community leaders are hosting educational forums throughout the month of July to raise awareness and bring attention to Texas Fibroid Awareness Month.
