After dismantling our Clean Break in late June, we developed a testing strategy to ensure that we would immediately catch CIV if it reentered the building. We have still not seen a positive CIV test since May 1st, and starting next week, we will move to routine spot testing in our contagious room rather than testing every dog as they move in. We're excited that we're able to continue moving toward normal operations, and we will keep you updated as operations continue to change!

For years, Operation Kindness has consistently been one of our top partners, and we're so grateful for all they do! We spoke with them about their incredible impact, and here is what they said.
OPK is our number one partner with a little over 500 pets tagged this fiscal year alone. What makes this partnership work so well? Transparency – Transparency goes a long way in building trust. Dallas Animal Services is open about any behavior concerns and proactively let us know when illness spreads in their shelter. So, when they tell us which animals are safe to take (to the best of their knowledge), we trust that. By working together openly and honestly, we can combine our resources to help more animals in need.
Can you share a little bit about your different departments? Transport, Parvo, and Intake?
This page on our website provides a nice overview: https://www.operationkindness.org/what-we-do/
Shelter Operations and Adoption Programs
- Animal Care: Responsible for daily care of animals at the shelter
- Behavior: Develops and implements plans for animals with behavioral concerns
- Client Services: Process adoptions and interact with clients at the shelter; also manages the Pet Pantry
- Foster: Coordinates moving animals in/out of foster homes as needed
- Intake: Transports animals from partner shelters, schedule owner surrender appointments
- Kitten Nursery: 24-hour neonate kitten care while waiting to go to foster
- Medical: Responsible for daily care of medical patients, perform medical treatments (i.e. parvo, URI, etc.), spay/neuter and other surgeries.
- Offsite Adoptions: Care for and process adoptions for animals at retail locations and offsite events
- Volunteer: Coordinates and schedules volunteers for all departments
Community Initiatives
- Affordable, accessible veterinary services for community pets: Operation Kindness’ Community Initiatives team offers affordable, accessible veterinary services for community pets. Services include free or low-cost vaccine and microchip clinics, spay/neuter surgeries and general wellness.
- Shelter Partner Mentorships: Our Lifesaving Partnerships program creates partnerships between Operation Kindness and Texas shelters to save more animals in our communities.
- Interstate Transport: Our Interstate Animal Transport program aims to decrease the euthanasia of dogs and cats within Texas and across the southern United States by safely transporting animals from southern source shelters to northern destination shelters and rescues via ground and air transport.
- Forensics for animal cruelty: Operation Kindness supports Dallas Animal Services and the Dallas Police Department with forensic veterinary services.

Lastly, we would like to give a spotlight to the amazing people that come visit us on a weekly basis the intake team (Jamie, Pricilla, Jade, and Michelle).
Meet Michelle and her favorite tag Miso
"I haven't really had as much opportunity as the other girls to pull dogs from DAS, but I very specifically remember one of my first cats. Miso is a ginger tabby that I pulled in June 2022. It was one of my earliest solo transports and I was a bit nervous to be the one calling the shots, but Miso made it easy by walking right up to the front of his kennel to say hi.
|
I had to get approval from our medical team because he was FIV+ and had recently had his tail amputated. I was so happy when Christy said I could bring him back and even happier when we set him up as one of our lobby cats. He was my buddy and one of the first pets that I could point to and say, "He's here because of me."

Meet Priscilla and her favorite tag Jessi
“Jessi has ears as big as her heart and a smile to match”
“Jessi is a very sweet and gentle girl who loves to play with her dog friends”
“Jessi bounces around the play yard chasing her favorite toys, Tennis balls”
“Jessi has a heart of gold”

Meet Jayde and her favorite tag Newton
Newton's family member requested our aid from out of state when his owner passed away. We were able to promptly get him from DAS after diligent planning. After which, the intake team SWOONED over this fella, bathed him, let him hang out with us in the intake office, and watch him slowly emerge from his shy shell. He was able to get placed into foster for a few days in which he made himself right at home and was subsequently adopted by that foster (an Operation Kindness staff member!!)
|
We were fortunate that we were able to receive Newton updates from the day he arrived until after his adoption. His out of state family member and his new adopter were able to make contact and we were able to enjoy puppy photos of a younger Newton. We continue to love seeing his sweet face around and receive photo updates of his holiday costumes!!

Meet Jaime and her favorite tag Rugrat
Rugrat gets my pick as favorite DAS dog I think. My photo is when I first got him back to Operation Kindness.
