DALLAS - The City of Dallas today celebrated the beginning of Pride Month with the annual raising of the Pride flag at Dallas Love Field and City Hall Plaza.
“Dallas has a diverse Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer or Questioning (LGBTQ+) community and is committed to supporting visibility, dignity, and equity for all people in the community,” Deputy Mayor Pro Tem Omar Narvaez said. “June has become a symbolic month in which LGBTQ+ persons, and supporters, come together in various celebrations of pride.”
Mayor Eric L. Johnson has also declared the month of June as LGBTQ+ Pride Month in the City of Dallas. The rainbow flag, also known as the LGBTQ+ pride flag or gay pride flag, has been used since the 1970s as a symbol of LGBTQ+ pride and social movements. To celebrate Pride Month, the City Council approved a resolution on June 17, 2020, directing the city manager to replace the City of Dallas Official Flag with an official City of Dallas Pride Flag for the month of June.
The noon ceremony featured festivities on the Plaza with support from the City of Dallas LGBT Employee Resource Group, Dallas Police Department LGBTQ+ Liaison, Dallas Fire LGBTQ+ Liaison, the Dallas Mavericks, and the Dallas Wings. Flags will also be flown at several city facilities for the month of June including Dallas Executive Airport, Jack Evans Headquarters, J. Erik Jonsson Central library, Fair Park, and the Dallas Fire Rescue training facility. City partners will also display multi-colored lights of the downtown skyline June 1-4 in support of Pride month.
