The purpose of the Juanita J. Craft Artist Residency Initiative is to contribute, in a significant manner, to the cultural and artistic impact of the South Dallas community. The Initiative aims to encourage artists of the African Diaspora in all disciplines to explore new working methods and to develop socially engaging, interactive art experiences immersed within the neighborhoods of the South Dallas area.

Actual Footage of Me a Solo Exhibition

April 7 - May 27 | South Dallas Cultural Center | Free

Actual Footage of Me is a vibrant and playful collection that features some of the most beloved artworks by Dallas-based Illustrator and Fiber Artist Nikki Dionne. The exhibition showcases Niki’s unique artistic vision and explores themes of self-discovery and identity as a black woman.

As visitors enter the show, they will be immediately drawn into Niki’s world, where they will encounter a variety of faceless black women brought to life through different mediums such as fiber, oil pastels, and digital illustration. The exhibition space will be filled with Niki’s signature illustration style and textures that create a captivating visual experience.

This exhibition is free and open for public viewing from April 7 – May 27, 2023 at the South Dallas Cultural Center Arthello Beck Gallery.

GirlTrek: Walking in Juanita Craft’s Footsteps

Let’s celebrate the achievements of Juanita J. Craft and the NAACP Youth Council by walking in her footsteps on the State Fair grounds! Juanita Jewel Shanks Craft was a woman who would not accept injustice or inequality. Believing that equality and justice were for everyone, she fought for them all her life. By the time she ran for Dallas City Council as a woman of 73, her efforts had already helped change the world.

GirlTrek is a life-saving sisterhood. It is a campaign to heal intergenerational trauma, fight systemic racism and transform Black lives. As women organize walking teams, they also mobilize community members to support advocacy efforts and lead a Civil Rights-inspired health movement.

This event is open to all ages. Registered participants will receive a free t-shirt and handbook.

Expressive Art Workshops and Juanita Craft Residency Workshop with Jessica Bell

Expressive Art Workshop: March 25 – May 27 | Juanita Craft Workshop: March 25 – April 29 | South Dallas Cultural Center | Free

Expressive Art Workshops | March 25 - May 27 | This program is the 8th annual free art workshop programing offered by artist Jessica Bell. To give back to the community, Bell annually offers free art programing to residence of the City of Dallas funded through the Office of Arts and Culture.

Juanita Craft Residency Workshop | March 25 - April 29 | Focusing on community, artist Jessica Bell will be hosting open studio events at the South Dallas Cultural Center. Come work side by side with a local artist and create your own piece of art.

Both workshops are for ages 18 years and up. Participants can sign up for one or all classes. Click the button below for all dates and times.

Raise Your Voice | Living Art Camp is excited to partner with the South Dallas Cultural Center to bring Art + Social Justice to the students of Dallas. Through art, we can enhance the lives of the youth in our communities. The arts provide a safe place for children to be creative regardless of race of socioeconomic background. Statistics and research have shown that the arts help with child development and cultural awareness.

For four weeks students will learn about the wonderful contributions of the African diaspora in art. They will explore photography, music, art, dance and spoken word. Each day they will be led by near peer instructors, community volunteers and industry professionals to engage in hands-on, multimedia activities that will help them develop observation and technical skills in drawing, painting, printmaking, and various other art mediums. For 4 weeks students will learn about painting, dance, poetry, photography, music production and other various forms of art! 3 meals per day, transportation for field trips, technology devices, art supplies and camp t-shirts will be provided! To register for this event, parents / guardians will need to complete this application by providing student information and parent contact information.

When: June 5 – June 30, 2023 | Monday – Friday
