Mayor Johnson welcomes 50 mayors and other leaders from Mexico to City Hall

DALLAS — Mayor Eric L. Johnson welcomed to Dallas City Hall on Thursday a delegation of 50 mayors and other leaders from across Mexico, including secretaries of the economy of Mexican States.

“I’ll always remember the warm welcome that your country extended to me when I visited your great nation last year,” Mayor Johnson said. “Your visit to Dallas today is a next step in building a lasting bond between our citizens.”

Mayor Johnson’s first official international trip as mayor was to Mexico in March 2022. He participated in meetings in Mexico City and Monterrey — which is Dallas’s Sister City.

Thursday’s delegation was sponsored by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Mexico, and the Consulate of Mexico in Dallas helped develop the leaders’ Dallas itinerary. The Consulate of Mexico has collaborated with the City of Dallas for years on a variety of joint initiatives that promote tourism, cultural exchange, and economic development between Mexico and Dallas.

Mayor Johnson described the event as “historic” and presented a proclamation to Tlaxcala Mayor Jorge Corichi recognizing April 20, 2023, as “Mayors of Mexico Day” in Dallas.

“It is a pleasure to meet in this space, the Dallas City Hall Flag Room,” Mayor Corichi said. “Today’s meeting is an affirmation of cooperation and sisterhood between Mexico and the United States.”

Mexico and Dallas enjoy a balanced trade relationship and a sustained upward trend in tourism. There are more than 100 daily flights between Mexico and Dallas, and approximately half of the international passengers at Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport originate from or depart to Mexico. In addition, Mexican visitors account for 44% of the annual international visitor spending in Dallas, and 35% of all Mexican investments in the U.S. are headquartered in Dallas’s metro area.

“Our current partnership with Mexico is strong, and I know that it can and will grow stronger,” Mayor Johnson said. “I look forward to many more exchanges like this one in the years to come.”
