We're thrilled to offer 30 spots for fosters to participate in the Texas Rangers mega-adoption event on July 29th. It's expected to have a huge turnout of potential adopters.
Fosters are encouraged to stay with their foster dog during the event to provide adopters with valuable insights on their foster pet, but it's not mandatory. For those planning to stay, a simple criminal background check will be required before the event. Rest assured; we'll provide all the necessary information to complete the process.
If staying isn't possible, don't worry! You can still drop off your foster pet at 8am with a DAS staff member and pick them up at 6pm if not adopted. Sign up here to attend.

"This was my very first litter. There were SEVEN kittens. DAS offered to split them up, but I said no. I wanted the siblings to stay together for as long as possible."

Can you share some of the most important lessons you've learned from fostering kittens?
Fostering kittens has deepened my value for responsibility, compassion, patience, and love. It is a lot of work, but it's so rewarding. I always thought I was a dog person, but now I am a dog and cat person (leaning more towards cats).

"DAS called me one afternoon and asked if I could take a sick kitten that just came to the shelter. He was cold and sickly. I was in the opposite part of town at the time, but I drove to Oak Cliff afterwards and picked him up.
He was so cold when I got him. I warmed him up, and got him fed. He had additional conditions. He had IBD, too. But I helped him, and I ended up keeping him. This was when I learned how to help a kitten with his bowel movements. YIKES! These pictures show his transformation".

Can you tell me about a memorable or challenging experience you've had while fostering kittens?
During my second year of fostering kittens, I had a couple litters that had contracted panleukopenia. I was ready to do anything I needed to do to keep them alive. There were a couple trips to the ER, lots of medication, learning how to give subcutaneous fluids, etc. I was able to save 4 kittens from the virus.

How do you handle the transition when it's time for the kittens to be adopted or move to their permanent homes?
It is hard to give up the kittens after I spent so much time caring for them. Knowing that I did my best for the kittens, and picking up a new litter does make it easier to let go of the kittens when it's time for them to move to their permanent homes.
