Learn How to Make Protest Signs
Saturdays: Feb. 25 & March 4 | South Dallas Cultural Center
To honor Juanita Craft, Matt Bagley of Iron Frog Press and PrintShop a Go-Go will host a collaborative printmaking project to celebrate this Dallas icon. The Iron Frog Press team and participants will work together to create and print an edition of four color (CMYK) linoleum block prints. The Protest Signs as Art Printmaking Workshop is an advanced class, but all skill levels are encouraged to participate because this is a team effort. This project is open to the citizens of Dallas and admirers of Juanita Craft. Adults with special needs are welcome. This class is available to twelve participants who must sign up in advance.
1st Class: Saturday, February 25 | 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.
2nd Class: Saturday, March 4 | 1:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m.
This workshop is free with registration. Participants must be 16 years of age or older and commit to both classes to complete the workshop.

The Smart Project: Saturday Creative Workshops
Saturdays: March 4 - April 22 | 10:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. | South Dallas Cultural Center
The Smart Project, established in 2019, is a free Dallas-based youth creative art program that offers 8-12 grade students from underserved backgrounds creative lesson plans focusing on photography, digital media, and the visual arts as well as providing creative community teaching opportunities. Students will prepare for their college and career experience by giving them the tools needed to succeed as artists, designers, photographers, and creative writers.
Traditional Visual Arts Workshop | March 4 – 25: The first four-week session will focus on the visual arts and be centered around traditional skills. There are only 12 spots open for this workshop.
Digital Media Workshop | April 1 – 22: This session will focus on digital media and be centered around character development. There are only 10 spots open for this workshop. The priority sign-up date for this workshop is Saturday, March 11.
Each program is intended to build off the prior week. For your student to get the most out of the program, they will need to attend all sessions.

Grab your friend, boo, or come solo and enjoy the last film screening of our Love In Black film series, Brown Sugar. A special conversation will follow with Brittny Nation, Camika Spencer, Lincoln Stephens, and James Faust after the film.

Juanita J. Craft: A Celebration of Love & Legacy

To celebrate Juanita J. Craft’s 121st birthday, the Friends of Juanita Craft House & Museum invited the community, artist residency recipients, and the Craft Kids to the South Dallas Cultural Center on Feb. 9. Participants gathered for an evening of celebration and love to honor Juanita and the re-development of the Craft House & Museum. The South Dallas Concert Choir, which began in 1986 as a 15-member workshop choir through the South Dallas Cultural Center, performed a few songs for the attendees.

🖤 He Gone Cry In The Car
2 Inspire Peace and The Art Inspired Healing Collective presents He Gone Cry In The Car, an artistic exploration of Black male pain. This event, held at the South Dallas Cultural Center Feb. 24, will showcase and highlight how Black men face and do not face their issues. Mental health is real in our community, and its time to Heal. This is event is free with registration. Learn more
📹 MVMTLS: Movement of Lone Stars
This multi-media exhibition centers on a film excavation of a Black collective memory with South Dallas starring as a supporting character. The film’s sonic landscape is shaped around interviews that took place in the quarantine lockdown of 2020, tracing the memories of various Dallas residents on the subject of their childhoods. Its use of collected archival footage, present-day photography, home videos, and aged photographs creates a tapestry that travels from moment to moment in stark contrast to the environment in which these conversations took place. 📚 MLK Book Club: Assata
In partnership with the Juanita J. Craft House Civil Rights House & Museum and the Martin Luther King Jr. Branch Library, the MLK Book Club is a space to share, connect and learn through a selected book. For this series, we will be reading Assata: An Autobiography by Assata Shakur starting Feb. 25 at 1:00 p.m. at the MLK Library. Learn more
Historic Juanita Craft House Set to Reopen in May
The Juanita J. Craft Civil Rights House & Museum set its grand opening for May 20, about five years after a pipe burst caused severe damage to the historic home. The rehabilitation is approaching 90% completion according to a city memo. Construction will wrap up March 10. Learn more
