Starting today, we are re-vamping our kennel care procedures and changing the way kennels are cleaned.
We are training staff on these new procedures over the next few days, in preparation for the new Clean Break. All volunteers who clean kennels; either during kennel care, dog walking, or any other position; will need to be trained on these new procedures by kennel care staff.
We are working on developing new training videos. In the mean-time, please check in with staff will offer support and delegate tasks during morning cleaning.
With the new procedures, kennel care may look a bit different than it has in the past. In addition to cleaning kennels themselves, we will likely have you help clean play yards, and help transport blankets & towels to and from the kennels.

Pet Food Pantry at DAS
Dallas Animal Services will now be offering a pet food pantry on site at the shelter! We will be adding pantries on some Saturdays during the month and we need volunteers to assist with packaging and distributing food and recording the amount of food distributed! We are quickly growing our reach into the community and the pet food pantry is a great way for you to get involved. Shifts are approximately 2 – 2.5 hours so they are excellent for anyone who just needs or wants to give a few hours of their time. Our first pet food pantry at the shelter will be February 25th from 8:30 am – 10:30 am. If you are interested, You can sign up using the link here or on MyImpact!

Refeeding Syndrome
When you see an animal that has been starved, your first instinct is probably to give them lots and lots of food, but this can make them sicker or even lead to death. When an animal comes in that is very thin, the DAS Medical Team puts them on what is called a “Refeeding Schedule”, which is designed to slowly reintroduce nutritious food at a pace that their body can handle. Please DO NOT give very thin dogs treats or extra servings of food, it can lead to additional weight loss, anemia, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, neurological problems, and even death.
