City of Dallas, UNT Dallas partner to host Summer of Safety Celebration August 27

Free community fair will include music, games and resources

DALLAS — Mayor Eric Johnson has announced the City of Dallas will host a Summer of Safety Community Fair and Celebration to recognize work that helped reduce youth violence during the summer months.

The celebration will take place from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 27, 2022 on the campus of UNT Dallas. The free event will feature games and music, including a Dallas ISD Battle of the Drum Lines and K104 DJ Lady Jade. The fair will also include appearances from Dallas Police Department officials and booths that will provide information on available community programs and City services.

“Public safety is our top priority,” Mayor Eric Johnson said. “And if we are going to achieve our goal of becoming the safest major city in the country, we cannot rely on law enforcement alone. We need a collaborative effort between our police department and our community. While our job is never done as long as we still have victims of violence in our city, I am excited for us to get together to celebrate our relentless efforts to keep Dallas families safe during our Summer of Safety.”

Mayor Johnson and Dallas Police Chief Eddie Garcia announced the Summer of Safety campaign in June to promote the city’s public safety and youth programs. Historically, crime increases during the summer months while students are out of school; however, the Dallas Police Department reported from 2021 to 2022 year-over-year reductions in violent crime in June and July.

“There is still work to be done, and one life lost is one too many, but we should be proud as a City of this progress,” said Dallas Police Chief Eddie Garcia. “This didn’t happen by accident. It is the result of a true collaboration, between our City leadership, our community and the men and women of the Dallas Police Department.”

Dallas’ Summer of Safety included free and low-cost Dallas Police Department, Public Library, Park & Recreation and Arts & Culture programs available to youth, and helped lower the City’s violent crime rate, serving as a model for other major U.S. cities.

“We will continue to collaborate in reducing crime and strengthen our neighborhoods in Dallas,” City Manager of Dallas T.C. Broadnax said. “We thank all the families that participated in the Summer of Safety youth programs.”

UNT Dallas is located at 7300 University Hills Blvd, Dallas, TX 75241 at the end of the Dallas Area Rapid Transit Blue Line. Free self-parking is available.

Dallas’ Summer of Safety Celebration is made possible thanks to support from UNT Dallas, Allyn Media, Central Market, Coca Cola – Arca Continental Southwest Beverages, K104, Omni Hotel Dallas, UNT Dallas, UT Arlington University Crossroads Visit Dallas and Williams Chicken.
