The project documents the neighborhood of South Dallas and several of its residents, business owners, and community leaders. South Dallas is a community rich in culture and history, but it is quickly changing. The goal of the project is to preserve a period in time that tells us where the neighborhood are before it changes.

The 2022 Juanita J. Craft Artist Residency is now accepting applications!
The purpose of the South Dallas Cultural Center Artist Residency Initiative is to contribute to the cultural and artistic impact of the South Dallas community. The Initiative aims to encourage artists of the African Diaspora in all disciplines to explore new working methods and to develop socially engaging, interactive art experiences immersed within the neighborhoods of South Dallas. Practitioners working within, beyond, or outside of the traditional art market are encouraged to apply.

Yoga With Friends is an on-going series created by Ashley Williams for Black people who are looking to deepen their connection with self by strengthening their bodies through yoga and mindfulness practices.
The week Wine Down will help you shed the work week, connect with friends, and welcome in the weekend.
After our session, you can look forward to a small grazing station and wine options to top off the “Wine Down” and time to share gratitude and positive affirmations.

In collaboration with Dallas Innovation Alliance, join us at SDCC to create colorful pieces to display in your garden, front yard, or even your kitchen counter. In this free 2 hour session, you and your child will learn about various life cycles, create unique pots to display the things that bring you joy, and a plant that you will be able to take home and watch grow. You will learn about the good and bad bugs in your garden while using this knowledge to create bug-like rocks and attract the good critters to your plants. This is a family-centered event that invites parents to participate with their kids. Seats are limited for this workshop and is “first come, first serve” with registration.

Black Culture Celebrated Blog
The month of May is also Mental Health Awareness Month, and 2 Inspire Peace Inc. of the Art Inspired Healing Collective brought the community together once again to heal through art, music, food, dance on May 7! The day consisted of workshops hosted by a variety of artists and healers in the Dallas community.
Dallas City Mayor Eric Johnson proclaimed May 1st as Art Inspired Healing Week.

POETCHELLA International Festival
The 2nd POETCHELLA festival will be held in Dallas, TX the weekend of August 4-7, 2022, at the world famous Lorenzo Hotel. The event is Texas’ premiere Literary festival presented by Candy’s World Ent. The festival will be headlined by internationally acclaimed poets Rudy Francisco, Taalam Acey, Dasan Ahanu, Boris Rogers (Bluz), Charles Perry (CP Maze), I Am Poet, Richmond, Virginia Poet Laureate Roscoe Burnems, Masterpiece, C.R.U.S.H., and Obbie West, with workshops, daytime events including comedy, an LGBTQ+ open mic, fashion show, international poetry slam and more.

Juanita J. Craft helped organize the Dallas Youth Council, which would become the model for youth organizations in NAACP chapters around the country. The young adults who were members of the Dallas Youth Council were called the Craft Kids.
