Recent events raised several questions about how Dallas Police Department (DPD) is working to address crime in underserved communities. As noted by Chief Garcia in the City Hall press conference held at 12 noon, to better prevent such tragedies going forward, DPD recommends a strategy to ensure promoted events can meet similar standards for crowd safety as large events throughout the City, which I fully support. As such, I have asked DPD to work with the City Attorney’s Office to investigate creating an ordinance to ensure promoter, vendor, and site accountability; adequate public safety/security at events; and permit oversight and enforcement for violation of these standards.
Also please note the following data shows that despite these crises, our strategy is working and on the right track.
- Across the 47 grids that DPD tracks in the City of Dallas, during the latest reporting period, street-level violent crime dropped 66 percent. Of those 47 grids, 23 are in the southern part of Dallas.
- In gun crime across the three divisions of southern Dallas, in South Central it’s down more than 12 percent; Southeast is down more than 13 percent; and Southwest is down more than five percent.
- Total violent crime is down more than nine percent in South Central; more than 13 percent in Southeast, and more than 18 percent in Southwest.
Also, this week the Office of Data Analytics and Business Intelligence (DBI) in partnership with the DPD will launch a new interactive Crime Analytics Dashboard giving the public a closer look at DPD crime-related data.
I look forward to discussing our progress and advancing our strategy during the Public Safety Committee meeting Monday.
