Mayor Johnson proclaims Saturday as 'Texas-Oklahoma Red River Showdown Day' in Dallas

DALLAS — Mayor Eric Johnson has officially proclaimed Saturday, Oct. 9, 2021, as "Texas-Oklahoma Red River Showdown Day" in the city.

Mayor Johnson’s proclamation is meant to help celebrate the college football rivalry between the University of Texas at Austin and the University of Oklahoma. No. 21 Texas and No. 6 Oklahoma will square off in the annual neutral-site game played Saturday at the Cotton Bowl during the State Fair of Texas. Kick-off is scheduled for 11 a.m.

“Saturday will be a great day in Dallas. There is no greater annual rivalry in college football than the Red River Showdown, no better venue for the game than the historic Cotton Bowl in Fair Park, and no more exhilarating time to have it than during the great State Fair of Texas,” Mayor Johnson said. “Both universities’ pride, traditions, and fan bases have made this game an awesome experience, and this proclamation shows how excited our city is to play host.”

Mayor Johnson, a proud native Texan, added that Texas is listed before Oklahoma in his proclamation “to finally settle the decades-old debate as to which comes first.”

The Texas Longhorns lead the all-time series against the Oklahoma Sooners, 62-49-5.

Here is the full text of Mayor Johnson’s proclamation:

WHEREAS, The stakes are high for both teams coming into the game; the Longhorns enter the weekend ranked as the No. 21 team in the nation, according to the Associated Press, and the Sooners are ranked No. 6; and
