Mayor Johnson awards special recognition to young Dallas actress Skye Turner
DALLAS — Mayor Eric Johnson on Thursday awarded a special recognition to 12-year-old actress and singer Skye Dakota Turner.
Turner, a Dallas native, recently appeared in the Aretha Franklin biopic Respect and is set to resume her role as young Tina Turner in the Broadway production Tina: The Tina Turner Musical.
Mayor Johnson gave Turner the special recognition Thursday in the Dallas City Hall Flag Room.
Here is the text of the special recognition:
WHEREAS, Skye Dakota Turner, is a native of Dallas, Texas, where she began singing with the Charles Rice and Dallas Metroplex Musicians’ Association Choir; She excelled in various debate and oratory competitions and gained a plethora of experience and received praise for her performances; and
WHEREAS, Skye has held leading roles in "Purple Rain" at Prince The Musical (2017), “If Only You Knew” at An 80’s and 90’s Musical Revue (2018) and “Childhood” at Michael The Musical (2019), all written and directed by Emmy Award-winning Curtis King from The Black Academy of Arts and Letters; and
WHEREAS, Skye gained national attention through several viral videos of her singing Patti Labelle’s “If Only You Knew”, Tamela Mann’s “Change Me”, and Stephanie Mills’ “Home”; and
WHEREAS, Skye’s 2019 appearance on the Steve Harvey Show has solidified her recognition as a stand-out singer and performer; In 2020, she thrilled audiences as a young Anna Mae in Tina - The Tina Turner Musical on Broadway; and
WHEREAS, In 2021, Skye starred as the young Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin, in the new biopic, ‘Respect’; Through this role, she has been hailed by critics as “a force to be reckoned with,” and it is stated that her performance as a young Aretha “will leave you with chills”; and
WHEREAS, Skye serves as a beacon of hope for young Dallasites, particularly young female Dallasites of color, as she makes strides in her acting career, bringing joy to all who have the privilege of watching her perform.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, ERIC JOHNSON, Mayor of the City of Dallas and on behalf of the Dallas City Council, do hereby extend special recognition to
