DALLAS – City Manager T.C. Broadnax invited seven candidates to interview for the Dallas Police Department’s (DPD) top spot beginning Tuesday. “I’m pleased to report our progress in this process,” City Manager Broadnax said Thursday, “and know the men and women of DPD look forward to new leadership continuing the work Chief Hall began towards R.E.A.L. change – responsibly, equitably, accountably and legitimately reimagining public safety.” The search to lead DPD was launched when Chief U. Reneé Hall, who has served since 2017, announced in September her departure at the end of the year.
The candidates who will interview are:
- Albert Martinez – Director of Security for Dallas Catholic Dioceses/Former DPD Deputy Chief
- Avery Moore – Assistant Police Chief, Dallas Police Department
- Eddie Garcia – Chief of Police, San Jose, California
- Jeff Spivey – Chief of Police, City of Irving, Texas
- Malik Aziz – Major, Dallas Police Department
- Reuben Ramirez – Deputy Chief, Dallas Police Department
- RaShall Brackney – Chief of Police, Charlottesville, Virginia
Public Sector Search and Consulting, an executive talent recruitment firm experienced in police chief searches for dozens of cities including San Francisco, Seattle, Nashville and Sacramento vetted 36 applicants from across the United States. Council Members’ questions provided to Public Safety Committee Chair Jennifer Gates and candidates’ answers will be pre-recorded for viewing on cable TV and City of Dallas’ social media channels next week.
Additionally, 55 organizations representing Neighborhood and Business; Faith Based and Non-Profit; Police Oversight and Cultural Diversity; Law Enforcement Partners; Police Employee Associations; and City Executive Staff have been invited to participate in stakeholder panel interviews beginning Dec. 15. During Monday’s December meeting of the Public Safety Committee, staff and Public Sector Search will provide an update on the DPD Chief search.
Based on feedback from these discussions, City Manager Broadnax will then select final candidates for interviews he will personally conduct. City Manager Broadnax expects to select and appoint the next Chief in December to start in early 2021.
On Thursday City Manager Broadnax also appointed Lonzo Anderson to serve as Interim Chief beginning December 15. “I am honored the City Manager has asked me to serve as Interim Police Chief during this transition and remain committed to advancing the department’s efforts to address violent crime,” said Anderson, a 23-year veteran of DPD. “I’m grateful to Chief Hall for her leadership and continued service ensuring a smooth transition and will likewise look forward to helping the new chief get up to speed in early 2021.”
