Mayor Eric Johnson's statements on Governor Abbott's orders, convention center hospital

DALLAS -- Mayor Eric Johnson issued the following statement today regarding Gov. Greg Abbott's new executive order postponing elective surgeries in some counties and his decision to pause reopening plans:

“Steps like the ones taken by the governor today are necessary to free up hospital capacity and slow the spread of COVID-19, which is threatening lives and livelihoods in our city. The numbers have been moving in the wrong direction, and we must do all that we can to stop this outbreak in its tracks.

“Health and safety regulations are crucial to our efforts. We also need our residents to take simple precautions to help us prevent needless tragedies. Avoid gatherings, practice social distancing, stay at home when possible, wash and sanitize your hands frequently and thoroughly, and, perhaps most importantly, wear a mask in public.”

Mayor Johnson also issued a statement regarding Thursday's Federal Medical Station meeting:

"The DFW Hospital Council and Dallas County informed us this morning that they do not want to stand up the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center pop-up hospital at this time. They believe they are capable of handling a COVID-19 hospitalization surge in their existing medical facilities."
