Mayor's Milk Initiative distributions scheduled for 11 sites on Saturday
DALLAS -- The Mayor's Milk Initiative continues Saturday with distributions at 11 sites across the city.
The initiative is a partnership between Mayor Eric Johnson, Dallas-based Borden Dairy, Dallas ISD, and local faith leaders. Thus far, more than 1,500 families in need have received free milk at four distribution sites.
The North Texas Food Bank has provided meal boxes that will be given out with the milk at each site Saturday. Volunteers will also hand out Census fliers.
"COVID-19 has hit Dallas hard, and I am pleased that we are able to provide assistance through the Mayor's Milk Initiative to families in need during these trying times," Mayor Johnson said. "As someone who grew up in a working class family in West Dallas and Oak Cliff, I know that every little bit of help can make a difference. I look forward to helping thousands more people this weekend through this partnership."
The milk distributions are made possible by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s new Farmers to Families Food Box Program, which is part of the Coronavirus Farm Assistance Program (CFAP). Borden Dairy received the USDA’s largest award under the Farmers to Families Food Box Program and plans to distribute a total of 700 million servings of milk in the Southeast, Southwest and Midwest regions, including Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Mississippi, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee and Texas.
Mayor Johnson expects to visit multiple sites on Saturday. Most distributions will begin at 9 a.m.
