Mayor Eric Johnson issues proclamation declaring Friday, March 6, as "Meals on Wheels" Day

DALLAS — Mayor Eric Johnson on Thursday proclaimed Friday, March 6, as "Meals on Wheels Day" in the City of Dallas.

During a news conference with City Councilmember Cara Mendelsohn and VNA Texas President and CEO Katherine Krause, Mayor Johnson issued the proclamation, thanked volunteers, and spoke about how Meals on Wheels has addressed hunger, loneliness, and nutrition among the senior population in Dallas.

"These are issues that deserve our attention," Mayor Johnson said. "One in six seniors in Dallas County struggles with hunger. Our senior population is growing in Dallas, and their needs are growing as well. Thankfully, Meals on Wheels makes our city and its seniors stronger, healthier, and happier."

VNA Meals on Wheels serves 4,500 hungry, home-bound seniors and disabled adults every weekday. Last year, VNA Meals on Wheels distributed a total of more than 1.1 million meals to Dallas County seniors.

In addition, about 1,200 Dallas seniors receive Meals on Wheels daily at City of Dallas recreation centers while they gather together for programs and social activities.

During the month of March, several Dallas City Councilmembers and other elected officials will lead the 18th annual March for Meals campaign by delivering meals to seniors.

"Dallas is home to a growing number of seniors, and I am thankful for Mayor Jonson's leadership in recognizing the need for community support of the agencies doing such important work, the people behind the extensive volunteer efforts, and the dignity of our precious senior community," said Councilmember Mendelsohn, who represents Far North Dallas' District 12. "Our community is stronger for having this incredible agency."
