Deputy Mayor Pro Tem Adam McGough Elected to the 2020 Board of Directors for the National League of Cities

Dallas, TX – City of Dallas Deputy Mayor Pro Tem Adam McGough (District 10) on Saturday was elected to the 2020 National League of Cities (NLC) Board of Directors during the Congressional City Summit in San Antonio. This is a victory for our city and our region as Deputy Mayor Pro Tem McGough begins this two-year board service alongside local elected officials from across the country.

The National League of Cities, founded in 1924, is the oldest and largest national organization representing municipal governments across the United States. NLC’s mission is to strengthen and promote cities as centers of opportunity, leadership, and governance.

Election to the board required the sole endorsement of a candidate’s local council, the endorsement of their State’s Municipal League, and the endorsement of the NLC nominating committee, consisting of 15 elected officials from across the country.

“It is an honor to have the opportunity to represent Dallas and the interests of all cities, towns, and villages on the national level. Effective federal advocacy always starts here at home, with listening to the voices of our communities and ensuring those voices have a seat at the table,” said McGough.

“At a time when gridlock and division pervade our nation, local governments continue to press towards collaboration and getting things done. Standing together as local elected officials, we have a critical role to play in Washington, advocating for sustainable infrastructure investments and innovation in key areas including mental health, transportation, affordable housing, and other quality-of-life issues that directly impact our neighbors.”

In his presentation to the national NLC nominating board, McGough stated he is most proud of the way the Dallas City Council members showed up to support his campaign. “In the not too distant past, our council was not in total agreement on much, but we have leaders in this city who have come together unanimously to serve our citizens and exemplify the principle of #LoveYourNeighbor,” said McGough. McGough credits the victory to all the council who showed up and advocated for Dallas to have a seat at the table.

“I am proud of Deputy Mayor Pro Tem McGough for stepping up and putting himself out there, and I am excited for Dallas to have a seat at the table on the board of the National League of Cities,” said fellow Council Member Adam Bazaldua. “It is an important time to be a part of the national conversation. With a national election and the 2020 census around the corner, crucial budget and legislative decisions will be made that will have major impacts on big cities across the country. I am confident we will be well represented.”

“I am happy that Dallas will be represented on the national board of NLC. I am grateful for Adam’s leadership and advocacy,” stated Council Member Paula Blackmon.

Working in partnership with state municipal leagues, NLC serves as a resource and advocate for the more than 19,000 cities, villages and towns.

NLC is governed by a board of directors comprised of four officers, all past NLC presidents still in local government service, eight state league directors, seven advocacy committee chairs, and 40 at-large members.
