Dallas Animal Services participates in Heartworm Awareness Month

Dallas – April is Heartworm Awareness Month, and Dallas Animal Services (DAS) will be treating eligible heartworm positive dogs for free when they are adopted for the entire month. These dogs will also have their adoption fees waived for the month of April. Heartworm positive dogs will be available for adoption at 1818 N. Westmoreland Rd.

“Heartworm disease is a problem all year in Texas,” said DAS Director Ed Jamison. “Dogs treated for heartworm can go on to live normal lives, but heartworm positive dogs in our adoption program are often overlooked because of the cost of treatment. We are hoping to help these deserving adoptable dogs get into loving homes by covering the cost of treatment for their adopters.”

Heartworm disease is preventable with inexpensive monthly medication, and is transmitted by mosquitoes. The treatment is costly, time consuming, and difficult on the dog. DAS sees about 2,000 heartworm positive dogs annually. Pet owners are encouraged to talk to their veterinarian about heartworm prevention.
