YOUTH FIRST AND DALLAS CITY COUNCIL MEMBER ADAM MEDRANO HOST AN “I AM JAZZ” BOOK READING & PANEL DISCUSSION AT DALLAS CITY HALL ON MAY 18
Dallas – Youth First, a program of Resource Center, and Dallas City Council Member Adam Medrano are partnering to host an I Am Jazz book reading and panel discussion on Thursday, May 18, at 4 p.m. in the lobby at Dallas City Hall, located at 1500 Marilla St, Dallas, TX 75201. This event is in conjunction with HRC (Human Rights Campaign) and NEA (National Education Association) second annual National I Am Jazz School and Community Readings, in support of transgender youth. Council Member Medrano will read the book, followed by a panel discussion with representatives of the transgender community and youth service providers.
I Am Jazz is a children’s book written by transgender teen, Jazz Jennings. She is one of the first transgender children to talk publicly about her identity. At the age of 7, Jennings spoke with Barbara Walters on “20/20.” Following a year of unprecedented attacks on the rights and dignity of transgender young people – both at the state and federal levels – the day of readings are intended to foster safe and welcoming schools and communities for young people.
About Youth First: Serving middle and high school aged youth, 12-18 years old, Youth First, a program of Resource Center, equips them with the skills they need to lead open and productive lives. Family ties are strengthened, peer support networks are built and mental health is supported through activities that build confidence and address the specific issues that LGBTQ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer/questioning) teens face during their critical and formative years. In addition, Youth First provides programming and resources for parents and families.
About Council Member Adam Medrano: Representing District 2, Adam Medrano was elected to the Dallas City Council in June 2013. For more than ten years, Medrano has dedicated his personal and professional time to help the community, especially its youth. Council Member Medrano serves as chair for the Mayor’s LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender) Task Force and the Public Safety committee, and member on the Transportation & Trinity River Project and Economic Development committees.
