Park and Recreation officials join community in unveiling project on Friday, February 24

What      Unveiling of “Our History” at Opportunity Park

               In observance of Black History Month, Dallas Park and Recreation presents the

               history of South Dallas through art that recounts the community’s early days and

               Dallas’ African-American pioneers. “Our History” highlights the area’s legacy in four

               areas: 1) The early neighborhoods; 2) The first African-American High Schools;

               3) African-American Pioneers; and 4) Early African-American businesses.

               Four oversized interpretive panels present information and photos by celebrated

               Dallas photographer R.C. Hickman in a semi-enclosed, cylinder-shaped structure of

               metal and steel. Suspended across the structure’s top    is the word “Opportunity,”

               meant to inspire those who visit the site.

               “Our History” compliments other artwork at Opportunity Park called “The

               Conversation”, which recognizes living and deceased community leaders and their

               contributions in eight professions. In 2003, then Councilmember Leo Chaney

               envisioned a lasting memorial to inspire the community – particularly children - and

               share often overlooked but vital details on the rich history of South Dallas and of the

               inspiring leaders who came from this community.
