Domestic Violence Awareness Month in Dallas

Dallas Mayor Pro Tem Pauline Medrano

to hold a Press Conference Proclaiming October 2011 as

Domestic Violence Awareness Month in Dallas

Domestic violence and abuse is a crime that impacts men, women, and children in Dallas every day, yet the problem is often overlooked, excused or denied. In 2009, the City of Dallas received nearly fourteen thousand domestic disturbance calls to which police were dispatched. Domestic Violence Awareness Month acknowledges that thousands of people are victims of violence each year, and hundreds have lost their lives to domestic abuse. No one deserves this kind of pain and the first step to breaking free is recognizing that your situation is abusive and rededicating ourselves to breaking the cycle. During Domestic Violence Awareness month we encourage safe and healthy relationships by supporting service organizations in their efforts, for freedom from domestic violence.

What:        Mayor Pro Tem Pauline Medrano will proclaim October 2011 as Domestic Violence Awareness Month in Dallas.  This annual October recognition evolved from the "Day of Unity” created in October of 1981, by the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence. Its purpose was to connect advocates across the nation working to end violence against women and their children.

A Special Recognition will be presented to Mary Kay, Inc. for its continued corporate commitment to end domestic violence. Through the “Give Hope, Give Joy and Give Dreams” campaign awareness continues to combat domestic violence.

Verizon will present “Monsters in the Closet”, a video presentation with a powerful message about domestic violence.

A special presentation will be made to Dr. Ellen Solender, who has served on the City of Dallas Domestic Violence Task Force since its creation in September 1987. Current Chair Mayor Pro Tem Pauline Medrano will introduce Council Member Delia Jasso as the incoming chair of the Task Force.
