Texas Comptroller Huffines: Comptroller’s Office Enhances Fraud Prevention Measures to Protect Taxpayer Funds

(AUSTIN) — The Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts has implemented new fraud‑prevention tools designed to strengthen financial controls and safeguard taxpayer dollars across statewide payment systems.

To meet modern fraud‑monitoring standards and further secure electronic payments, the Comptroller’s Treasury Operations division has implemented account validation and fraud risk assessment services to strengthen ACH controls across all state agencies.

These services help ensure that direct deposit instructions are accurate and legitimate before taxpayer funds are transferred. By validating account information and assessing fraud risk by using advanced analytics, the Comptroller’s office can reduce erroneous payments and prevent unauthorized transactions.

“These enhancements provide an added layer of protection for taxpayer funds,” Comptroller Don Huffines said. “By strengthening our fraud‑detection processes, we are improving the integrity and reliability of state financial systems.”

The implementation aligns with requirements from the National Automated Clearing House Association for risk‑based fraud monitoring. The improvements reflect the Comptroller’s continued commitment to modernizing financial safeguards and ensuring that Texans’ money is handled responsibly.

The Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts serves as the chief financial officer — treasurer, check writer, tax collector, procurement officer and revenue estimator — for the world's eighth-largest economy. The agency also administers statewide initiatives, including the Texas Broadband Development Office, State Energy Conservation Office, Texas Opioid Abatement Fund Council, Texas college savings plans and more.
