The Texas Education Freedom Accounts (TEFA) program application window closes tomorrow, March 31, at 11:59 p.m. CT.

We’ve received applications for more than 256,000 students across the state, and we don’t want to see anyone left out. 

Complete your application ASAP! As long as you meet the deadline, the timing of your TEFA application does not affect eligibility or your child’s chance of receiving an account for the 2026-27 school year. 

Select your educational setting. If you are undecided between selecting a participating private school or homeschool/other for the 2026-27 school year, please select private school for now.  

• After March 31, families cannot switch from homeschool/other to private school. 
• You can switch from private school to homeschool/other, if needed. 

You don’t need to choose a school when you apply. Almost 2,300 participating schools are listed in our school finder tool — including a growing number of accredited online schools.  

• To receive initial funding on July 1, select a school by June 1. 
• The final school selection deadline is July 15 for initial funding in mid-August. 
• More schools will continue to join the program on a rolling basis. 

Confirm your child’s special education information. If your child has a disability, please confirm their documentation as soon as possible.   

• If your child has an Individualized Education Program (IEP) from the 2023-24 school year or more recent, the best way to confirm their information is with an accurate Texas Student Unique Identifier, or UID (look up their UID online). You will be asked to enter this information when you apply. 
• If your child doesn’t have a current IEP, they have other options, including a signed disability certification form (PDF).  

After March 31, we will place students into application priority tiers and begin awarding funding, starting with Tier 1. We will continue funding each tier in order as long as funds are available. Once we reach a tier where the remaining funds cannot cover all students, we will run a lottery to allocate the remaining funding within that tier and any subsequent tiers. Award notifications will begin in April.
