Art Contest Demonstrates Value of Water

Value of Water winner #1

The winners of the 2021 Value of Water Mini Poster Contest have been chosen from more than 100 entries. For this year’s contest, the City of Arlington encouraged students in pre-kindergarten to 4th grade to submit drawings of ways in which water is important to them and describe their artwork.

The annual art contest is sponsored by Arlington Water Utilities, Arlington Public Library, River Legacy Living Science Center, and Tarrant Regional Water District. This year’s winners came from several Arlington ISD elementary schools – Duff Elementary, Remynse Elementary, and The Oakridge School. Other winners attend Harmony Science Academy, Texas Online Preparatory School, or are homeschool students. They are:

  • 4th Grade – Lukas K.
  • 3rd Grade – Madeleine R.
  • 2nd Grade – Zibby T.
  • 1st Grade – Kien D.
  • Kindergarten – Paloma A.
  • Pre-kindergarten – Ella R.

The yearly Value of Water contest and winners announcement is set to coincide with the Oct. 21 observance of the Value of Water campaign’s Imagine a Day Without Water. Imagine a Day Without Water is a national education campaign that brings together diverse stakeholders to highlight how water is essential, invaluable, and in need of investment. Pollinator Demonstration Garden Planned

Arlington Water Utilities and Tarrant Regional Water District are working with local conservation stakeholders and community groups to restore native prairie and wildflowers to 2.75 acres of land adjacent to the Lake Arlington Dam. This gated area will also feature demonstration garden beds with native plants and a gathering area for gardening classes, field trips, and other community events.

BioSurvey

On Oct. 16th, TRWD and Arlington Water Utilities partnered with Tarrant County Master Naturalists to host a day-long biosurvey to collect data about plants and wildlife at the future site of the Lake Arlington Native Plant and Pollinator Garden. More than a dozen volunteers, collected over 830 observations, and documented nearly 330 species of plants and animals.
