National Attention for Our Work
In February, Nashville hosted the 2015 Cities for Financial Empowerment Fund Annual Gathering and the Federal Reserve's Nashville Branch generously allowed us to use their conference space. The gathering brought city managers and non-profit staff from twelve cities across the country to Music City to kick off the third year of the Financial Empowerment Center replication initiative.
Read an overview article from CFE Fund CEO Jonathan Mintz - "Transforming the Availability of Professional Financial Counseling in America".The Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta recently posted a Partners Update - "Integrating Financial Counseling With Other Muncipal Services" - which gives an overview of the growing work of the financial empowerment network across the country. It features our work and progress here in Nashville.
Debt Paid Off, Credit Score up, Now This Mom is Saving for the Future
Iman Hassan is a young, single mom who works with Financial Counseling Specialist Kathy Payne at our Foster Street Center. Her original goals were to obtain better housing for her and her two children, improve her credit, learn how to make better financial decisions and "some day open up a bank account."
After six sessions with Kathy, Iman has reduced her debt, paid off all her past due accounts, and established a banking relationship. She now has checking and savings accounts with auto transfer to her savings account and opened up a secured credit card. Her hard work on these steps have raised her credit score by 82 points! She is now revisiting her career path, seeking additional employment and is working on a college fund for her two children. She is continuing her ongoing counseling with Kathy.
