MHC News

The next Historical Commission public meeting will be held on Monday, June 17 at 12:00 p.m. at the Sonny West Conference Room, Howard Office Building, 700 President Ronald Reagan Way. You can find a full list of upcoming and previous MHC meetings on our website.

After completing our survey in Bordeaux and West Nashville, fieldwork in Bellevue continues for Phase III of the Davidson County Cemetery Survey grant project. CM Kimbrough (District 1) hosted a community meeting where staff member Caroline Eller spoke about the project. Attendees expressed great interest in the grant project, with some members noting that their district contains many cemeteries with enslaved burials. We hope to complete the survey by July.

We’ll be hosting a college intern, a recent college graduate, and Dr. Kayleigh Whitman to develop Nashville Sites tours as part of the Participatory Budget funding as well as other Nashville Sites website and marketing work. The funding will also allow us to add 6 new historical markers (3 for each tour), which will complement the two Nashville Sites tours being developed in North Nashville, as well as 6 additional historical markers in the 12 South/Edgehill neighborhood.

Speaking of historical markers, congratulations to the alumni groups at Bellevue High School and Goodlettsville High School! Both groups sponsored historical markers for their alma maters, and both markers were dedicated with much fanfare in late May. We look forward to celebrating more historical markers in the near future: the Warehouse 28 marker on 8th Ave S on Friday, June 14 and the Russ McCown/ Sir Cecil Creape marker in Richland/West End on Saturday, July 13. Follow us on social media for more updates on these ceremonies!

Construction is entering the final stages at Sunnyside with work focusing on finish detailing, landscape and site improvements, and IT and security equipment installation. The official ribbon cutting and opening of Sunnyside and its outbuildings will take place on Saturday, June 29 at 10 a.m. Mayor O’Connell, Former Mayor Cooper, Parks Director Odom, Council Members Cash and Vo will be providing remarks. The ceremony will be followed by an open house/tour of Sunnyside and its outbuildings until 1:00 p.m. Friends of Sevier Park and the 12 South Neighborhood Assoc. will be providing refreshments for the event. Please mark your calendars and join us for this milestone celebration!

MHZC News

The MHZC’s next public hearing will be held on Wednesday, May 19 at 2:00 p.m. at the Sonny West Conference Center, Howard Office Building, 700 President Ronald Regan Way. View the MHZC meeting schedule and application deadlines on our website. Access archived videos of the MHZC meetings on the Metro YouTube channel anytime!

The Friends of the Hubbard House (1109 1st Ave S) with the support of CM Vo has applied for a Historic Landmark designation for the property. The house is the former residence of Dr. George W. Hubbard, founder of Meharry Medical College and the last remaining building associated with the original campus of Meharry Medical College. It was designed by noted architect Moses McKissack III, constructed 1920-1921, and is listed in the National Register of Historic Places [under McKissack and McKissack Buildings in Nashville (1908-1930) Thematic Resources]. Seay-Hubbard United Methodist Church, located nearby at 1116 1st Ave S, owns the house. The Friends of Hubbard House is working to rehabilitate the house in order to provide healthcare, supportive services, and educational opportunities for the community. For more information, visit www.thehubbardhousenashville.org.

Cyril Stewart, Vice-Chair of the Historic Zoning Commission, has been chosen to present at the National Alliance of Preservation Commission’s Forum in West Palm Beach this August. He will be joining the organization’s chair as well as other presenters to lead a roundtable discussion on infill design in historic overlays. Stewart along with Commissioners Mayhall and Cotton will be attending the conference with the aid of a Certified Local Government Grant from the Tennessee Historical Commission.

Pierre Howell, the part-time historic zoning inspector that filled that position on a temporary basis as we went through the months long hiring process, ended his time with the department late last month, and Scott is now handling all historic zoning inspections. We thank Pierre for coming out of retirement to help us during a busy transition time.

Another successful Memorial Day Dash

Memorial Day Dash logo

The Nashville City Cemetery Association hosted another successful Memorial Day Dash on May 27, with over 300 runners! Proceeds benefit the Nashville City Cemetery Association’s preservation efforts and educational outreach.

For the first time, medals were given to finishers, and winners in each category received NCCA branded towels with their placement on it as well. News Channel 5 covered the event, as well as interviewing the oldest finisher (85!) You can find race photos on the race website.

Follow the NCCA on Facebook to learn more about their events and preservation efforts. You might even get a peak at the Chew Crew at work like they were on Memorial Day. If you don't know the Chew Crew, they are everyone's favorite lawn care workers on four legs!

Nashville City Cemetery updates

Repair work at the City Cemetery continues to be a top concern. Stephen Hutchins has repaired 14 gravestones that site manager Bryan Gilley selected as highest repair priority. Bryan has also started to document, remove, and store gravestone pieces that are laying in the grass. They are being stored in the maintenance building until they can be repaired, to prevent further damage. Bryan also attended a cemetery workshop at the Buchannan Cemetery on Elm Hill Pike conducted by the MTSU Center for Historic Preservation, in addition to his training with Jon Appell of Atlas Preservation. Wayside signs have also been cleaned of dirt and biological growth.

Metro Historical Commission Foundation updates

We hope you will make plan to join the Metro Historical Commission Foundation for a sneak peek at the progress at Sunnyside during their fundraiser Keep on the Sunnyside. The event will take place Thursday, June 6 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., and will showcase some of the unique discoveries uncovered during the construction process by individuals, companies, and institutions. During the event, Tim Finch of Finch Finishes will present on the historic paint analysis study and the graining of the front door and surround, Dr. Maegen Rochner will present on her dendrochronology of the three log structures at site, Metro Nashville Police Dept. will present on their ballistic analysis of the damage to the log house, and MHC archaeologist Dr. Adam Fracchia will present on the archaeological discoveries made at the site.

In addition, the new Nashville Sites tour of the Sevier Park will launch on Thursday, which was sponsored/funded by the Battle of Nashville Trust. The tour incorporates the new interpretive panels at the site, which feature QR codes that lead to both the tour audio and Augmented Reality (AR) models of the house and landscape.
