Mayor John Cooper speaks with TODAY Show Anchor Craig Melvin about Nashville's investment in Public High School Athletic Programs at East Nashville High School.
Mayor Cooper was excited to announce each public high school in Nashville will receive $1 million to invest in their athletic program. TODAY Show Anchor Craig Melvin visited East Nashville High School to talk about the new partnership between Metro Nashville, the Tennessee Titans, and The FANS Inc.
"It's about way more than just football. It's about making Nashville the kind of city where we want to raise our families and where everyone can thrive," said Eddie George, Head Football Coach at Tennessee State University and former Titans great.
After a deep playoff run last year, an East Nashville High School football player wrote to Mayor Cooper advocating for improvements to his school's athletic facilities. With this $15 million investment in Nashville's high schools, the Mayor hopes that each student knows Nashville cares about them and is investing in their future success.
"Our students are making strides in test scores and excelling academically, and their teams are going to the playoffs and winning championships. It’s time we meet them halfway by giving them the high-quality facilities they deserve,” said Mayor John Cooper.
With Pearl Cohn High School and East Nashville High School each vying for state football titles, Mayor Cooper looks forward to seeing how this new investment in schools will continue to drive students toward successful futures -- and hopefully celebrating a championship or two. Mayor Cooper visited several of the after-school programs to ensure educators have the resources and support they need to continue this critically important work.
“The Out-of-School Program Locator fills an important need to streamline the process for parents, and we hope lead to more kids participating in extended-learning opportunities both through MNPS and our outside partners,” said Makeda Watson, MNPS Extended Learning Coordinator.
Studies show children who have access to productive after-school programs demonstrated improved attendance and lower dropout rates, and often results in closing the performance gap for underserved communities, which contribute to a host of other benefits for our for Nashville’s young people.
