Caroline Eller

Please join us in welcoming our newest staff member, Caroline Eller! Caroline is a Nashville native who grew up in Charlotte, NC and has resided throughout the southeast. She earned a BA in Historic Preservation and Community Planning from the College of Charleston in 2007. In 2011, she earned an MFA from the Savannah College of Art and Design in Georgia. Caroline comes to the Metro Historical Commission from the Tennessee Historical Commission, where she was a coordinator for the National Register of Historic Places program. In her free time, she enjoys hiking, kayaking, yoga and the occasional skydive. 


MHC/MHZC UPDATE

The Metro Historical Commission was awarded a Preservation Grant from the Tennessee Historical Commission to administer a Cultural Landscape Plan for Fort Negley Park. 

Join MHZC staff for a panel discussion with Tarek El Gammal (Southeast Venture) and Andy Howell (C.A. Howell and Company) moderated by Phil Ryan (Cherry and Associates) for the Chamber of Commerce Midtown Quarterly meeting at the Islamic Center of Nashville (2515 12th Ave S) on October 3 at 8:30 a.m. to learn more about the history, growth, and development of the 12South neighborhood. 

Also, a big thank you to Fred Zahn for his presentation at the Tennessee Preservation Trust conference last month on cemetery preservation efforts at the Nashville City Cemetery.

edmondson

Join Cheekwwod Estate & Gardens in celebrating the life and legacy of William Edmondson with a new exhibit of his work from October 7-November 12. The exhibit, entitled "Visions from Above: The Life and Work of William Edmondson," will feature over 20 Edmondson sculptures from the Cheekwood collection. Edmondson was the first African-American artist to have a solo exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art, which ran from October 20-November 4, 1937.

This month's First Tuesday presentation will be on October 3 at 12:30 p.m. Historic theater performing artist Debbie Watts will give a preview of her piece, "From Tennessee to the White House, With Love: Tennessee's First Ladies,"with a first-person reading of First Lady Eliza Johnson.

What's happening in Metro Parks? 

The Stones River Bend Regional Park and the Southeast Davidson Regional Park draft master plans have been released and are available for public comment. Please take time to look at each plan and take the survey--there's even a chance to suggest a name for each new park!

Celebrate the 75th birthday of steam locomotive No. 576 and spread awareness about its restoration by the Nashville Steam Preservation Society on October 13 at Centennial Park. 

Join Fort Negley Park in honoring our military veterans and their families at this year's Vet Fest on October 14. Co-sponsors Vetlinx and Operation Stand Down Tennessee want to increase awareness of community resources, offer direct access to support service, and celebrate and recognize military service.

In 1927, Luke Lea donated the original acreage that became Percy Warner Park. On October 28, join us in celebrating the 90th milestone of Nashville’s emerald gem! Activities for all ages will be available throughout the day, from nature walks and craft projects to story times and a van ride on Gravity Hill. 

Mark Your Calendars!

On October 6, Historic Nashville, Inc. will announce the 2017 "Nashville Nine" list of our city’s historic properties endangered by demolition, neglect or development.  Every year, the Nashville Nine list is compiled through a public nomination process revealing historic buildings and places that matter to the people of our city. The public announcement of this year's list will take place at 12:00 p.m. at the corner of Fort Negley Boulevard and Chestnut Street (in front of Fort Negley Park).

Did you know? 

MHC helped to co-create the first Germantown Oktoberfest, along with Monroe Street Methodist Church and Assumption Church. This year, join us for the 38th Annual Nashville Oktoberfest on October 5-8 for live music, great food, plenty of beer, and over 100 local and regional artisans. Prost!
