In Case You Missed It
Belair Mansion is now protected by a Historic Landmark Overlay. The ordinance was sponsored by Council Member Jeff Syracuse and was signed by Mayor Barry on July 24, 2017. Belair Mansion was listed on HNI's Nashville Nine in 2014, as one of the city's nine most endangered historic places. The new owners, Lewis B. James and Dr. Connie M. James, plan to use the historic space as a bed and breakfast and event center. Many thanks to CM Syracuse, the Jameses, HNI, and the countless concerned community members for working with MHZC to make this possible.
One of Nashville’s few remaining Greek Revival
antebellum homes, Belair was listed on the National Register of Historic Places
in 1971. Belair was constructed from 1832-1838 for Elizabeth V.
Harding, daughter of John Harding of Belle Meade, and was originally called
“Belle Aire.” Elizabeth Harding died in 1836 and William Nichol and his wife
Julia Margaret Lytle purchased the house in 1838. They added the large, winding
staircase and wings to enlarge the house for their large family. After the
Civil War, they connected the main house to the rear kitchen section. Nichol
was a merchant and steamboat owner, and served as mayor of Nashville from
1835-1837.
