LECTURES AND LUNCHES

marker

On July 9, 1918, the "worst train accident in American history" occurred at Dutchman's Curve, in what is now Belle Meade. Join author and historian Betsy Thorpe on July 9 as she leads a walking tour of Union Station, the greatest remaining artifact of the train wreck, in commemoration of its 99th anniversary. Tour begins at 2:00pm in the hotel lobby.

Then, on July 20, the Tennessee State Museum Lunch and Learn Series will host Ms. Thorpe to discuss the Dutchman's Curve train wreck, its socioeconomic and racial implications, as well as its connection to World War I efforts on the homefront. The lecture begins at 12:15pm at the TN State Museum, 500 Deaderick St.

THC Certificate of Merit awards ceremony

On June 7, the Tennessee Historical Commission hosted its annual Certificate of Merit award celebration. Among those honored were Tennessee State University and the Metro Historical Commission for their work on the Nashville Conference on African American History and Culture, which has celebrated the contributions of African Americans to Nashville and Tennessee for over 35 years. Many of our participants have never missed a conference, and we look forward to many more years of seeing you!

interns

Thank you interns!

If you've stopped by Sunnyside recently, you've probably noticed a few new faces. Mia Polk (second from left), a rising senior at East Nashville Magnet High School and Rohan Pethkar (far right), University School of Nashville Class of 2017, are summer interns at MHC through Mayor Megan Barry's Opportunity Now initiative. Mia has been working with Scarlett Miles to digitize the "Profiles of African Americans in Tennessee" collection, while Rohan is working with Jessica Reeves to digitize the source materials for all MHC historical markers. In addition, Rohan and Mia--along with graduate intern Kelsey--have attended meetings, lectures, planning sessions, and site visits to learn more about the work that MHC does. Good luck in the future, Mia and Rohan, and thank you for your hard work this summer!

Above: The interns joined executive director Tim Walker and staff member Jessica Reeves on a site visit to the Grassmere Historic Farm at the Nashville Zoo.
