This week I am doing something a little different. I have turned over this column to one of our Urban Fellows to share some first-hand impressions of the program and her work in our communications department. I am so proud to welcome all 113 of these amazing young people. Thank you for spending the summer with us, and remember Memphis needs you!
This summer, I am honored to be one of 113 Memphis Urban Fellows selected from a pool of more than 500 applicants, making this the largest class in the program's 10-year history. Being chosen is an incredible opportunity, and I know all of us feel the weight and the gift of that. The program's mission is to develop the City of Memphis' future leaders and civic change agents by connecting college students and recent graduates with hands-on experience inside local government. The City's continued investment in the Urban Fellows program reflects a commitment to creating opportunities for young people to contribute their talents, perspectives, and passion for community while helping shape the future of Memphis.
My summer officially started Monday, June 1, when all 113 of us gathered in the City Council Chambers for orientation. From the moment it began, our orientation leader made everyone feel so welcome that my nerves disappeared almost immediately. Looking around at my peers, other young people who care about community and genuinely want to make a difference, I felt at home. The room was buzzing with energy, full of people who were excited and glad to be there. By the end of orientation, I had already made friends and had a gut feeling that this summer would surprise me in ways I hadn't even imagined yet.
I was placed in the Communications department with three other Fellows, Laurel, Paytn, and Carter, and we clicked instantly. Our supervisors are incredible: helpful, patient, and encouraging us to try new things and not be afraid to fail. We learn something new every day, and that kind of growth doesn't happen without a program that believes in you enough to invest in it.
Our Communications Urban Fellows are already in the field. Check out what they're up to by clicking the video above.
In just our first few days, we are already out in the field, visiting the City's Maynard C. Stiles Wastewater Treatment Plant and various other locations to capture content. Getting to explore parts of Memphis I have never seen before feels like a gift. I honestly did not expect things to move this fast, but I am so glad they are, and it sets the tone for everything to come.
What stands out to me most is how much trust and responsibility the program gives us from day one. Whether we are learning from mentors, meeting community members, or helping tell the stories of the work happening across all levels of Memphis government, it is clear that Mayor Young and the City believe young people have something real to contribute. That belief makes showing up every day feel important.
I grew up in Memphis, and getting to spend my summer doing meaningful work for the city I love is something I will carry with me for a long time. I cannot believe the first week is already behind us. I am even more excited for what comes next.
