This weekend, Memphis will once again host one of the year's most meaningful events, the St. Jude Memphis Marathon Weekend. The weekend brings thousands of runners, families, volunteers, and supporters into our streets, all moving with a shared purpose. It is a moment when our city shows what it means to lead with compassion, community, and hope. It is also a moment when the world sees Memphis at its best.
Each year, this marathon reminds the world that Memphis is home to an institution whose innovations reach far beyond our city and save lives across the globe. St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital continues to revolutionize the treatment and cure of childhood catastrophic diseases, supported by thousands of clinicians, scientists, and staff who work on the Memphis campus every day. ALSAC, its fundraising and awareness partner, employs more than two thousand people at its Memphis headquarters to help sustain this lifesaving mission. This work reflects the best of who we are as a city: caring, determined, visionary, and committed to progress that reaches families everywhere.
The St. Jude Marathon reminds the world that Memphis is home to an institution whose innovations reach far beyond our city and save lives across the globe.
This event draws participants from all fifty states and more than seventy countries, showing that the hope created in Memphis resonates across the world. It gives us a remarkable opportunity to share the best of our city with visitors who come here to support the groundbreaking work of St. Jude. Last year, the marathon raised nearly sixteen million dollars, the highest total in the event’s twenty-three-year history, with more than twenty-two thousand participants. Since the beginning, the marathon has generated more than one hundred thirty-eight million dollars to support St. Jude’s mission, where families never receive a bill for treatment, travel, housing, or food.
On race day, our streets will fill with runners who have trained for months. Research shows that the average marathoner takes more than 50,000 steps before reaching the finish line. Each step represents a commitment to the cause. Each step raises money that fuels innovative research, compassionate care, and a brighter future for families everywhere. When we cheer these runners on, we are cheering for every child and every family at St. Jude. We are also showing the world that Memphis is a city that invests in hope, innovation, and one another.
Each street closed for this race becomes a pathway of hope moving through Memphis - let's remember this as you face any delays in your morning drive.
I recognize that residents may experience temporary road closures and detours on Saturday morning. I ask that we greet these moments with patience. Each street closed for this race becomes a pathway of hope moving through Memphis. If you find your route slowed by closures tomorrow, I ask that you take that moment to reflect on the work of St. Jude Children's Research Hospital and to lift up the children and families who depend on its groundbreaking care.
The St. Jude Memphis Marathon Weekend is a celebration of resilience, generosity, and the spirit that makes Memphis the model for hope-centered progress. Thank you for your support and your belief in the future we are building together.
