Unless you have been totally off the grid, you probably know that this was a big week for Memphis. We announced that our city will be the home of the world’s largest supercomputer, or as Elon Musk likes to call it, the Gigafactory of Compute.
This feat was accomplished by the collaborative efforts led by our amazing Greater Memphis Chamber team, who, together with our City teams and those at MLGW and the County, were able to pull off what no other city could. Together, we landed a very very very big fish. The accomplishment is enormous, and the impact will be historic. This is a transformative moment for Memphis.
We like to say that innovation is in our DNA - from the birth of the modern-day hotel, grocery store, and overnight delivery to groundbreaking medical discoveries, the blues, rock 'n' roll, and jookin'. We are a city of innovators, and it makes sense that Memphis feels like home to those seeking to change the world.
Because we have a proven track record of doing just that - changing the world.I want us all to stand a little taller today, Memphis. I want us to take pride in this moment because this is a big win for all of us. You have all heard me say that Memphis is on track to become the next great American city, and the selection of our city for this multi-billion dollar investment reinforces my confidence in that statement. But being at the epicenter of this work has the potential to do even more for Memphis and our community.
This project will invite collaborators. This project will spur investment and ideas. This project will dramatically accelerate the pace of global research, and further Memphis’ innovative narrative. This project will, once again, put Memphis on the map for changing the world.

Another benefit of this project is the potential to improve our environmental stewardship by encouraging the advancement of our progress toward building an effluent water treatment facility. The City of Memphis and TVA have been working on this solution, with the City of Memphis leading the charge. Our Public Works department has already engaged a reputable consulting firm on what it will take to build out a treatment facility to provide greywater for the company, TVA, the City of Memphis, and future commercial and industrial users, reducing the demand for aquifer water.
Memphis was chosen as the location for this project - the home of the world’s largest supercomputer - because of our ability to collaborate effectively and move quickly. You’ve heard me say it before, and this time, we can say it together, Memphis gets it done.
Personally, I am grateful for the agility of Director John Zeanah and the Memphis and Shelby County Department of Planning & Development, the pivotal roles played by our police, fire, and public works teams, and the leadership of MLGW and President Doug McGowen. Their collective efforts have been instrumental in advancing this project and fortifying a more robust and resilient Memphis.
I know there will be lots of questions over the next few months as the work begins, but I am confident that the partnership between the city of Memphis and xAI will produce great things.
Congratulations, Memphis, well done.
