This week, we held our 100-Day Address at Mt. Vernon Church in Westwood. Hundreds of you joined us to hear the report and my analysis of what we have learned during these first days in office. I've linked the full address below and given some individual links to key moments from the address throughout the text below, including our honoring of fallen Officer Joseph McKinney (link).
In our first 100 Days, we met with our community members and business owners; we gathered our internal teams; we met with partners and stakeholders throughout the community.
We convened groups that have previously worked independently - MPD, the DA, juvenile courts, judges, and our Memphis Shelby County Schools system.
We started the work of changing the narrative – we had meetings with the news media, social influencers, community activists, and legislators from across the state.
In our first 100 days, we held three One Memphis community town hall meetings, and we heard recommendations from our transition team. We created a new Blight Strike Team and Operation Code Zero (link). We also reduced violent crime and property crime, but we know that the numbers don’t mean anything until the community feels safe (link).
We invited mayors from across the county to join us in Memphis for the Black Mayors Coalition on Crime (link). And we announced our pandemic-level response to crime, including a goal of reducing crime by 10% every year (link). We announced that we were working on our Public Safety Dashboard, and we will include that here next week.
In our 100-Day address, we also shared a vision for our future. A future-ready, safe, and clean Memphis - a Memphis with more youth and family programs, a Memphis that attracts industry and influencers (link). The Memphis we all deserve. And we shared that our team is doing so much with the resources and tools we have (link). Our resources are stretched to capacity. We need more to do more.
Although it wasn't easy to state, I shared that we plan to ask for a tax increase when we take our budget to city council next week (link). And, today, I am asking you to tune in to the City Council meeting on Tuesday, to learn more about what we are proposing and how it will help to create a better, safer, stronger, more connected, and equitable community. The increase will allow us to invest in the programs and initiatives needed to add value and to make our city the Memphis we deserve.
I closed my remarks on Tuesday by asking Memphians to stay, to lean in, to be the change we all need to see (link). And I am asking that of you again today.
Together, we are turning the ship. Together, we are creating a better Memphis.
