The "Revolving Door” just keeps spinning around and around.

A couple months ago, I shared with you how a criminal received no prison time after shooting at a police officer.  And now, not unexpectedly, there is more to the story.

As a reminder, on July 14, 2021, a man pulled a gun on a Memphis police officer, who took cover behind a tree. The man fired three shots at the officer, and fortunately, none of them struck the officer. The suspect was later arrested in August and charged with attempted first-degree murder among other charges.

On December 7, 2022, the district attorney’s office and defense attorney agreed to a plea deal, which the officer opposed, but the court approved; the punishment was probation for eight years—no prison time.

On May 19, 2023, the man was arrested for aggravated assault and possession of a weapon (a drako handgun) as a convicted felon.  His bail was set at $15,000.

On May 19, 2023, the man was also charged with possession of a firearm during a dangerous felony, possession of a weapon (Glock 19x) as a convicted felon, and felony drug possession.  His bail was set at $10,000. He posted bonds through a local bonding company, normally 10% of the bonds, or $2,500, and was he released.

On May 23, 2023, a warrant was issued for the man for burglary. (As detectives continued their investigation, it was discovered the Glock pistol this man had on May 19 was stolen during a burglary of a motor vehicle hours before his arrest.)

On June 5, 2023, he skipped his court date on the two cases where he was let out on bond.  Now there is a warrant for his arrest for missing his court date, and law enforcement must find and arrest this same man yet again.

No Tears Project Memphis: The Oxford American, Memphis Public Libraries, and the National Park Service are excited to announce No Tears Project Memphis, a series of civil rights and arts education residency events taking place in Memphis, Tennessee June 10 – 14, 2023. Tennis Memphis: Tennis Memphis is a non-profit youth development organization and a 4-star chapter member of the USTA National Junior Tennis & Learning Network. They operate and manage seven tennis facilities including Eldon Roark, Wolbrecht and Leftwich Tennis Centers for us and offer comprehensive programs for youth, adults, and seniors, including USTA adult and junior league play and tournaments, clinics, and lessons.

A special focus of Tennis Memphis is serving under resourced youths ages 5-18 considered at risk. Financial assistance is available for youth programs and 80 percent of participants attend on a reduced rate or for free. Their annual fundraising activities ensure that no youth is turned away due to an inability to pay.
