Weekly Update

Friends,

I wanted to take a moment in this week’s Update to fill you in on the progress of some our large projects. The first (and you have seen me write about this before) is the new Leftwich Tennis Center. Slated to be completed later this year, this world-class facility will be the largest tennis facility within hundreds of miles. It will have 24 outdoor and 12 indoor courts — replacing the old facility that had eight outdoor and four indoor courts.

This project is a public-private partnership between the University of Memphis, the City of Memphis, Tennis Memphis, and a host of private donors and will be the future home of the University of Memphis Women’s and Men’s Tennis. If you get a chance, drive down southern just north of Audubon Park to see it. Below is a recent aerial shot.

Next— our Accelerate Memphis projects. As a reminder, the City (in partnership with City Council) issued $200 million in bonds to facilitate catalytic community projects in three focus areas (Activating Memphis 3.0, Improving Our Parks, and Revitalizing Citywide Assets) all across our city.

 

Currently, there are 130 Accelerate Memphis projects underway. Just to call out a few—we are working on a newly renovated Gaston Community Center (prior to renovation, all the large windows along the side were covered.)

And a new field and scoreboard at AutoZone Park

 

 

as well as splash pads coming this summer to Hollywood, Douglass, and McFarland Parks.

 

 

As I mentioned earlier, these are just a few of the many Accelerate projects happening throughout our city, and they are all scheduled to be completed by December of this year or earlier. To follow along with the progress of the Accelerate Memphis projects, go here.
