Good afternoon,
District 3 – Request a Speed Hump on Your Street!
The City of Memphis Traffic Engineering Department has an open application for residents to request speed hump installation on any street in their community where there are concerns of speeding or too much cut-through traffic. Here is a step-by-step guide to requesting a speed hump from the City of Memphis.
Step 1: Learn About the Benefits of Speed Humps
Speed humps are traffic calming devices that help to reduce speeds on residential streets. The City of Memphis exclusively uses rubber cushions.
Typically, a 40-60% reduction in speeders can be expected after speed humps are installed.
However, the current speed hump program takes roughly 24 months to be completed. Because of the lengthy approval process, it is important to get started on a speed hump request right away!
Step 2: Identify Your Street
To get started, identify a specific street segment of concern (for example, A street between B street and C street). It is more efficient to identify a specific street than to request speed humps for an entire neighborhood.
This information on the City’s Engineering website shares the Speed Hump Criteria to keep in mind while trying to identify a street.
Step 3: Submit Your Request
Requests can be submitted several ways:
- Make a request through the City of Memphis 311 office. You can call by phone (dial 311 on a cell phone or 636-6500 on a landline) or visit https://www.memphistn.gov/government/call311/.
- Fill out the Speed Hump Request Form and mail your request to:
Traffic EngineeringCity Hall125 N. Main Street, Room 668Memphis, Tennessee 38103
You can also call their office directly at 901-636-6710.
Citizens will be contacted by email or mail to confirm the request has been received. Make sure to include accurate and up-to-date contact information as incomplete, incorrect, or anonymous requests cannot be processed.
Step 4: Check the Status of Your Request
The below diagram demonstrates the many steps in the speed hump process.
